We recently connected with Megan Sherer and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was making the decision to pursue entrepreneurship. I knew that building my own business and practice in the wellness space would be challenging, but I also knew that not pursuing my dreams would be even harder. What felt even riskier was giving myself permission to pivot and reinvent myself, and my business, many times along the way. There have been several moments in my career where I knew I had to make a 90-degree turn away from what I had been investing my time and energy into. And these changes often didn’t make sense to the people around me, but I had to trust my gut. And there have also been times where ignoring my gut has led to significant challenges as well. I’ve gone into business with the wrong people, I’ve taken on clients that weren’t the right fit for me, and I’ve invested time and money in strategies that didn’t pay off. But each of those missteps also provided valuable lessons that ultimately helped point me in the right direction. Risks are ultimately about creating big momentum, which is the antidote to stagnancy. If I was still in the same place I was 10 years age because I was too scared to take a risk and follow the path my passion was leading me on, I would definitely feel like something is missing. I can’t imagine a world in which I don’t get to provide the work that I do now, so I’d go back and take those risks again every time.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a holistic therapist and relationship coach, a speaker, author and facilitator with 11+ years of experience leading women back to their most authentic self. I am the creator of the Love Alignment method and The Self Care Space, and have helped thousands of women create transformation in their lives and relationships. I am an expert in all things healing with training and certifications in somatic healing, hypnotherapy, life coaching, energy healing, yoga, meditation, and mindfulness-based therapy.
I always like to say that the work I do pursued me. I’ve ended up where I am due to a combination of my love for helping others, and my own personal struggles that led me to seek answers to big questions.
I originally started my career by supporting women in nutrition and eating psychology, by helping them to have a better relationship with their body. I did a lot of work in the nonprofit space advocating for body positivity and self-love. Throughout that time, I started to see a trend that I couldn’t ignore. All of the people who came to see me had one thing in common: unhealed relationship patterns and/or attachment trauma. This had also been a really central theme in my own personal healing journey, and I knew that I needed to share the life-changing tools I had been learning.
Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of serving clients in my private practice, group setting, and my accessible self-guided healing community. I love writing, speaking and teaching on all things love, self-love and wellbeing. The thing that I am most proud of is the fact that my work guides people back home to themselves, and helps them to choose themselves in a world that tries to convince us we’re not enough.
Simply put, I teach people how to love better, starting with themselves.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The two most important components to building my client base and creating more opportunities for impact have been: 1. Community
2. Owning my voice
I have put a heavy emphasis on community building and networking through relationships during my career. Partly because I just love getting to know people, and partly because this work is much more effective when there are many voices to amplify it. I’m beyond grateful for the friendships and business connections I have made along the way, and I would recommend any new entrepreneur to begin their community building before all else.
Second to that was my journey to discover and own my own unique voice in this space. I spent a long time filtering myself based on what I thought would make me seem more likable, and trying to mimic successful people. All that did was make me feel like more of an imposter. When I really began to speak to what felt true to me (both online and off), the caliber of clients coming my way changed dramatically. When you own who you are, the people who are meant to find you will be able to do so much more easily.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There were two years in my 20’s (age 22 and age 28) where I faced incredible challenges that absolutely brought me to me knees. I won’t go into all of the specifics since this would become a novel, but the amount of adversity I faced during those chapters was unlike anything I had experienced before. I faced trauma, loss, grief, abuse, depression, anxiety, and more confusion than I could make sense of. In many ways I consider both of these chapters of my life to be spiritual awakenings that ultimately aligned me with my true purpose in a deeper way, and there are so many powerful lessons that I learned from them. But the one I’ll share for now is this: your ability to bounce back from adversity and to allow it to expand you is your greatest super power. The first time I went through the wringer, I allowed it to take me out for a long time. I spent upwards of 3 years learning and growing and finding my way back from that one. So by the time the second challenging chapter came around, I knew how to face it with grace and strength. I bounced back in a matter of a few months, rather than a few years. And that’s when I learned the power of holding space for multiple things to be true. You can be feeling all your feelings and honoring your process, while still committing to the goals you have and the life you want to build for yourself. Don’t let the challenges take you out.
