We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Megan Phillips. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Megan below.
Megan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
In the social media industry, there seems to be this whole playbook everyone seems to follow. Like, post this many times, create that kind of content, and if you’re not doing videos, you’re out of the game? Well, I’m here to shake things up a bit.
For my small business clients, it’s not about hitting some magic follower number. Success is personal, right? I’m all about crafting a social media strategy that’s built on their brand and speaks directly to their dream clients. Sure, we might jump on a trending audio for a Reel if it vibes with their business, but chasing trends for the sake of it? Not our style. We’re more about quality over quantity, creating an impact that lasts.
If someone’s idea of success is a massive follower count, they might end up feeling like they’re on a hamster wheel that leads straight to burnout. But for us, it’s about finding that sweet spot, enjoying life beyond the social media hustle. Work/life balance? Oh, that’s our jam. Because let’s be real, the real magic happens off the screen.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Megan. A mom, founder of Megan Phillips Co, an organic social media management agency, and proud minivan driver.
I help my clients (the type-As, the Not-So-Creatives, or the Just-Don’t-Want-To-Do-It business owners), show up consistently online, build more personal connections, and book more clients through social media, without them having to do all—or any—of it themselves.
After my 2nd kiddo was born, I decided to give my corporate job the middle finger… metaphorically speaking. In reality, I gave the appropriate amount of notice, trained my replacement, and wrote out thorough procedures for everything I was responsible for. (I can’t help it, it’s the rule-follower and people-pleaser in me!)
I quit my job, became a stay-at-home mom, and realized after a few years that I had completely lost myself in motherhood. It felt like the only thing I was good for was changing diapers, fetching snacks, and pushing play on the remote to restart Paw Patrol for the 100th time (IYKYK).
Feeling lonely and purposeless, I stumbled across network marketing which taught me how to show up on social media, brand myself, and create content—all of which I quickly fell in love with. What I didn’t love was trying to grow a team. I gave it the good ol’ college try, though.
Within 2 and a half years, I decided I was ready to make my own rules, so I took the leap and started my social media business in January 2021. And it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Now, I get to spend quality time with my family while serving clients by creating authentic content that helps free up their time and energy, so that they can do more of what they love, too.
When we work together, your social media will spark conversations, build personal connections, and bring in new leads—without you needing to do all of the strategizing, planning, and posting on your own.
No more…
⤍ Trying to keep up with the ever-changing algorithm
⤍ Staring at a blank doc trying to come up with ideas for posting about you and your biz
⤍ Guessing about which kinds of posts will help you bring in more leads
⤍ Spending hours in Canva designing graphics
⤍ Going back and forth on whether your content is good enough
⤍ Debating about which hashtags to use (or if you should use them at all)
⤍ Remembering to actually post the content you create
If you’re ready to start showing up consistently on Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn to build more personal connections and book more clients through social media, without having to do all—or any—of it yourself… I have 3 different offers to help.
Full-service social media management is for established business owners who are ready to hand over their social and never think about it again. This includes a custom social media strategy, full implementation from start to finish, multiple platform posting, short-form video, and ongoing monthly support.
For those who love creating their own content and just need help coming up with a plan that they can easily follow, my Instagram Refresh VIP Week is for you. This is a one-time project with a fast turnaround time so that you can be off to the races to run your own socials, armed with a plan!
Or, if you’re newer to business and just want to pick an expert’s brain, an Instagram audit is for you. Within two weeks of booking, I’ll send over your thorough audit information so you can get busy sprucing up your IG presence and feel good about what to post moving forward.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
As a mom with three tiny tornadoes—I mean, kiddos, I had to unlearn what success looked like, especially in the world of online business.
I used to play the comparison game. Constantly measuring where I was against everyone else in the biz arena. But that’s a game you never really win. As my business evolved, I realized success isn’t just about hitting some magical money target.
I started this whole adventure to add some spice to life beyond mommy duties, you know? To have a purpose that didn’t involve wiping noses and finding lost toys. And here’s the plot twist: success, for me, is juggling that business boss role while still sneaking moments with my little ones.
Sure, there might be a day when all my kiddos are in school, and I can dive headfirst into growing my empire. But for now, in the chaos of this mompreneur life, I’m content. Success isn’t just about the destination; it’s about enjoying the wild ride along the way.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
It’s funny to me now that I get to do what I do because looking back at my childhood, I never thought of myself as someone who was creative. I wasn’t into artsy stuff like drawing or painting. Fast forward, and here I am, turning ideas into captions and whipping up well-thought-out graphics like it’s nobody’s business.
Being a social media manager lets me blend my Type A love for structure and organization with my Type B creativity. My mission? To help business owners save time & sanity, reach dream clients through social media, and be proud to show off their social media platforms.
