We recently connected with Megan Mendez and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Back in 2021, as a teacher, I was severely burnt out and was looking for ways to supplement my income to pay off debt and leave the classroom. I learned of freelancing and used it to make extra money on the side for my family. Throughout that process, I paid off $53,000 worth of debt, and at the end of the school year in 2021, I was able to walk away from my teaching job and fully dive into the world of entrepreneurship. What started as virtual assisting, then turned into social media management for small businesses, quickly turned into helping others on their path to financial freedom as well. I knew this would work because I had done it myself; I am the walking proof. I am passionate about helping others achieve financial freedom to truly live the life they desire. So many people live in debt and struggle with finances, and I have a way that can help them make money from home and help them truly achieve their dream of financial freedom -whatever that looks like for them.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a teacher by trade. I went to college to become an educator and then got my master’s in education leadership to eventually pursue becoming a principal. I have always had an entrepreneur, heart, and spirit, as well as a heart for teaching others. Post-COVID was hard as an educator, and being a teacher didn’t allow the time and financial freedom that I knew I wanted and needed in life. After only four years in the classroom and how burnt out I was, I knew I needed to change something. Because I have a passion for entrepreneurship, I knew there was something out there for me to do. I just had to figure out what that was. I was a high school math teacher, so I’ve always been passionate about numbers, hence why I was crazy enough to pay off $53,000 of debt in 12 months. There were a lot of strategies that went behind doing that. I have a specific way I go about paying off debt; the way my brain operates is different than others, and I like to share that with the clients that I work with who also want to pay off debt. The cool thing about freelancing is that there are so many things you can truly do under that umbrella. So exploring my clients’ passions and helping them make a profit from it to then use to assist with debt pay off is such a huge part of why they see the success they do.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Being vulnerable on social media is never easy, but it is necessary when trying to grow a personal brand. When you’re going through something, take your audience along with you. As I was a classroom teacher, I shared my story and struggles of being in the classroom. When I started paying off debt to leave the classroom, I shared with them how I was doing that, how much I was paying off, and what the process looked like from start to finish. When I started doing side jobs and eventually got introduced to freelancing, my audience saw it all. As I’ve continued to walk this path of entrepreneurship, I have always taken them along the journey with me. Share with your people the how of what you’re doing, keep them curious, and I promise they will follow along. If you’re just starting, be yourself and take people along the journey with you.. whatever that journey may be!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
You hear this often, but it’s all about who you know and the connections you’re making. 90% of my business has been referral-based. I have leveraged my network as well as created success within my clients, that most of my business has been from someone I know personally or from a referral from someone I know personally. Keeping yourself and your business professional and treating people right will go a long way when it comes to growing your clientele.
