We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Megan Lynn Tamasanis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Megan Lynn , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My journey in makeup artistry started all in the times of the classic OG Youtube Makeup Tutorials, back when I was in middle school. I enjoyed watching these videos so much, that I just wanted to get my hands on product and play. I was extremely inspired by seeing creators use products in unconventional ways. Since I was so young, I had a only a very small collection of makeup. Most of my collection was funded by birthday money and things I had “borrowed” from my Mom and older cousins. But, despite my limited tools, I was very determined to recreate as many looks as I could. It forced me to take the few things I had and really stretch the uses, trying to make it as versatile as imaginable.
Megan Lynn , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Megan Lynn Tamasanis, and I am a 26 year-old, self-taught, makeup artist & body painter. I have always coveted my makeup routine as a deeply personal and therapeutic form of self-care. I started this daily ritual when I was in middle school, and continue to treat it like a necessary start my day. Kind of like a morning cup of coffee, a wake-me-up. Even at a young age, my pure passion for my routine trickled into my close friends and family. Everyone around me always had questions about the makeup I was choosing to wear. I could talk makeup to anyone who would ask! And then the questions would move away from my personal routine, and soon people wanted to know, “how do I do my own?’. That’s really where I started to demonstrate makeup tricks on someone other than myself. It was like a fun puzzle to me – of course there are general “rules of thumb” for building a routine, but everyone is so different. There are so many ways to personalize your makeup. I couldn’t get enough! My morning ritual turned into an itch to keep exploring makeup beyond the “normal” and “daily” styles. The Youtube videos I would watch led me down the rabbit hole into a world of drag makeup, body painting and special effects. It was just so much fun. I was filling my brain with all of these cool ideas, and I wanted all of it. I would start my day with my makeup for school, and then come home and continue to build and add to my face.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal in my creative journey is to empower confidence and excitement around the personal daily makeup routine. I want my artistry and objective as a creative to stand out in a way that really defines my work from others in the industry. My mission is to share as much of my passion with as many people as possible, cultivating a community and a support system. I think what drives me the most is looking back at my past self and seeing how far I have come. I have to appreciate the impact that other creatives have had on me within my own journey, and I want to pay that forward to others and to be an inspiration. It reminds me to use every opportunity I have to share my art with the people around me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a makeup artist are the relationships I have built with people. When you are one-on-one with a client in your chair, there is a certain wall that drops – where you and the person in front of you become so candid with one another, its really unique. Being so close and personal with that person, physically, almost allows the both of you to emotionally open up to each other. It can be a deeply emotional and vulnerable experience and that’s what I love the most. I can say that many clients have for sure had major impacts on my life through conversations that we have had. Ive grown to learn so much about people, and met so many amazing individuals, it’s really inspiring. The transfer of energy is such a powerful and positive exchange. I want to continue developing these kinds of relationships and fostering an environment where people can feel comfortable with themselves. It feels great being able to be someone people can open up to. It makes me want to empower them and nurture their confidence. Both on the inside and outside.
