We recently connected with Megan Kumming and have shared our conversation below.
Megan , appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My “tag line” is “Relationship Expert. Results Focused. Community Driven.” I use my background as a mental health therapist to cultivate meaningful relationships personally and professionally. As a realtor, I use my skills to help my church purchase properties for our wealth creation program.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been told “no” or “you can’t” more times than I can count. Thankfully, I don’t take no for an answer. My high school teacher told me there was no way i would make it to college. I come from a family where college was expected not optional. I went to college and played tennis on a scholarship. I had a tutor for most classes and still couldn’t manage to make much higher than C’s. I failed my last final which would determine if I could graduate on time and walk with my class. I appealed to retake the exam. The school said no. I appealed again, they made the only exception in a school history. I passed the exam by a few points and walked with my class. I applied to grad school to be a counselor and was denied regular admission on the basis of my poor GPA. I was allowed admission on a provisional status. I made A’s and B’s in grad school. I was diagnosed with a reading comprehension LD and test anxiety which allowed me extra time on tests and tests in my own room. During grad school, developed a medically induced depression. In rare cases, a bacterial infection can cause a major depressive episode. One day I was fine and the next I was in a ball on my floor not wanting to live any longer. Through a series of tests and therapy’s, it was uncovered in an MRI that my brain looks like someone’s who has had TBI. I had never been in a traumatic a accident or anything, so it made no sense, but it did helped to make sense for so many pieces of my life thus far. We all have a story and mine is one about not quitting. After graduate school, I practiced as a Licensed Professional Counselor. I loved helping people but didn’t love that there were no metrics for my performance as a clinician. Growing up an athlete and being competitive, I could not reconcile this. I went to see a career counselor who told me I needed to be in sales. I inter vied people who were in different sales roles. I decided on real estate and got my license 2 weeks later and havent looked back.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Had to make one of the biggest pivots when I was 28 years old and changed careers after years of working towards my goal of becoming a licensed professional counselor
