We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Megan Kitzmiller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
I would LOVE it if the educational system did a better job preparing students for life after graduation. It seems like there’s a moment for every new grad where they ask themself “What am I doing with my life?” I certainly had that moment. In my opinion, a lot of that stress comes from realizing that suddenly, for the first time in your life, you’re on a different path than everyone around you. With no more standardized tests, finals, grades, or other metrics to show that you’ve achieved success… you can be left feeling a little lost and confused about what you want out of your life and career. It would make all the difference in the world if the education system taught students to look inward and figure out what they want out of their careers before they ever begin. It would allow people to find meaningful careers even earlier in life and hopefully avoid some of the comparison anxiety that many young people experience.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a freelance SEO writer and marketing specialist for e-commerce brands and women-founded small businesses. I write blog posts, emails, social media copy, and do graphic design for my clients so they can engage with more of their target audience. I’m fascinated by the idea that someone could have a brilliant idea, product, or service… but unless they can communicate it clearly and in an engaging way, the people that need what they offer may never find them. That’s where I come in!
Before I started my own business as a freelancer, I worked in corporate marketing and sales. I lean on that experience all the time. To effectively write a blog post, you not only need to be a good writer, but you need to be a good marketer. You need to understand the needs of the reader and where they are in the buying journey. Because of my background, I understand the context required to engage and convert my clients’ target consumers (and write fun, easy-to-understand content).
As if being a professional content writer wasn’t enough writing each day, I spend all of my free time screenwriting. I’ve had a deep love of film and tv for my whole life, and love developing a story into a script and sharing it with fellow creatives in my community. Right now I’m working on a scripted podcast and I can’t wait until it’s ready to share!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
This isn’t novel by any means, but finding peers that work in the same creative field has been a game changer for me. When starting my business, I wanted to feel like I could do it all myself, but the truth is that it’s much easier (and more fun) to do it alongside other people. I found other copywriters and content creators via social media and now have a community that I lean on frequently. It’s so nice to have people to ask questions too, get advice from, and share opportunities with.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Definitely Linkedin. Don’t be afraid to connect with people on Linkedin or other social media platforms and message them. You’d be surprised how many clients and peer relationships you’ll create by simply trying to make connections with others in your industry. People are incredibly kind, and if you message someone who is actively looking for someone with your background, they are usually open to giving you opportunities. If my clients aren’t coming from my personal network, they’re always coming from Linkedin.
