We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Megan Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Megan , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I am happy as an artist, there are certainly days I wonder about a more traditional path and what that would look like or where I would be in life. I do attribute much of my happiness to pursuing an art filled life and feel teaching grounds me while having the ability to continue to pursue my own art practice.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Megan Johnson, I have been painting& creating since I can remember. I have live in the Midwest and southwestern United States. With much of my work being landscape based I have been going through a big shift creatively moving back to the Midwest after a number of years away. I would say I am most proud of my work created for a show at Sonora Art Museum This past spring of 2023. Much of the work I created this focused on a severe wildfire damage the Sonoran desert landscape, and I set out on a mission to communicate, through painting, the work being done to revitalize the area. I am also proud of my continued pursuit of visual arts and arts education to my students and the environment created collaboratively with myself and my students in the classroom.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I would say the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is sharing., Sharing with others who appreciate the arts and connect to the work I create. Sharing within the classroom knowledge and ways of doing or thinkings is something I get great reward out of as well.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I think my goal or mission driving my creative journey is living. I want to see it all, do it all, soak everting in, and for me I process the world around me through art making. On that journey I hope to help others on their own creative paths and bring people together through visual arts.
