Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Megan Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi! I’m Megan, and I have been working in the Pinterest Marketing Field since early 2015.
I graduated from college in 2008 with a BS in Business Communications, and I worked as a merchandiser for a large grocery store supply chain in the midwest.
Many aspects of Merchandising go hand in hand with marketing a product. And that is what got me interested in the marketing field in general!
Fast forward to late 2014, and I have a three 1/2-year-old son and another baby on the way. This was when I started doing some freelance online marketing work from home. I needed to find a job that could move with me. See, my husband is a Naval Aviator, and we move every 2-3 years. Not many jobs love to hire someone who will only be there for a short about of time, and I knew I needed to get creative!
One of the companies I was helping out wanted me to look into Pinterest as a marketing source because it was a popular place for their target audience to hang out. So I drove right in. After about four weeks of taking courses and teaching myself how the platform worked, I started creating pins for them. After about four months, 20% of their traffic was coming directly from Pinterest, and their sales went up about 10%
After eight months, over 45% of their traffic came from Pinterest, and their sales were up over 40%. I knew I hit a marketing GOLD MINE.
I then created my website so I could use Pinterest for myself to help grow my new marketing business. Finally, after spending about three years helping others with their Pinterest Marketing, I created my own Pinterest Marketing course for those who wanted to teach themselves.
About 18 months after my Pinterest Marketing course (Pinterest Ninja) launched, I launched my second course, VA Ninja. A course that teaches others to do what I do and become a Pinterest Virtual Assistant. I knew if I could train myself to start my own Pinterest VA business, I could help others do the same!
Fast forward to 2022, and I have sold 7,000+ courses on Pinterest Marketing and how to become a Pinterest Virtual Assistant, and I have worked with hundreds of one-on-one clients.
The two things I love most about what I do is seeing other women start their own successful Pinterest VA businesses. Especially with the cost of childcare being so outrageous, being able to work from home while being a Mother at the same time is priceless.
It’s also great to see others learn how to successfully market their websites, blogs, and online stores with the help of Pinterest. Pinterest is such a traffic powerhouse, and I think many people underestimate it. With more and more businesses taking to Pinterest for their marketing needs, the platform is growing at a rapid pace. As of January 2022, Pinterest is the 14th largest online platform, beating Reddit and Twitter.
I think the one thing that sets me aside from the other Pinterest Marketing experts out there is I offer one-on-one support. I do LIVE weekly group coaching calls in my private group just for Pinterest Marketing and Pinterest VA students (at no extra cost). And I give my students the ability to chat with me one-on-one with an app called Voxer.
Since the platform changes often, I pride myself on staying up-to-date on Pinterest’s best practices and pinning strategies.
As cheesy as it sounds, I want to see everyone taking my courses to succeed. And I know that requires more support than just taking a course.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Starting your own business is hard, period. And I have hit about a thousand roadblocks along the way, including a massive fear of imposter syndrome hanging over my head.
With so many people being “experts” on the same topic, it was challenging to stand out at first. Why would anyone want to buy my course? Or hire me to work on their Pinterest account?
Before I heard yes, I heard no about 100+ times. I wanted to give up every single time. I would sit on my kitchen floor and cry, thinking, “Do I REALLY want to be doing this?”
When I first launched my course, I sold ten copies. TEN. And that was the point I almost quit. But man, am I happy I didn’t. I dug in, learned more about landing pages, sales funnels, and I focused more on building my email list with the RIGHT audience.
My second-course launch was thousands of times more successful, and now I sell courses on auto-pilot. Of course, I still hit roadblocks sometimes and have struggles, but I now have a better handle on how to get through them.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When it comes to building a solid online presence, my BIGGEST piece of advice is to grow it organically. I see SO many “follow” threads in FB groups and the issue with that is you are gaining followers who most likely don’t care about what you do or have to offer, and the chance of them engaging with and sharing your content is low.
I have a following of 41K+ on Pinterest, 4.5K+ on Instagram, and just over 2.6K on Facebook. While that’s not HUGE by any means, it happened solely by creating content that my specific target audience would be interested in.
And because of that, my posts get a lot of engagement, thus helping me grow my following even more.
If you focus on creating quality content that will benefit your audience, followers will come!
