We were lucky to catch up with Megan Ireland recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan , thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
The building we’re in used to be Silverton Flower Shop. The owner, Norma Jean was a beloved member of the community. We decided to honor her legacy by leaving the front as it was, just a little touched up. Our entire store front is just an updated version of what she had, even down to our name and sign.
Megan , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m definitely that cliché where I live baking because I grew up baking with my mom. Whether it was cookies, bread, pies, etc. I was usually in the kitchen right beside her. Back then I was more interested in eating cookie dough than baking though.
Today my passion lies much more with custom cakes. I love being able to be creative and artistic and make things fun and beautiful.
I think I’m most proud of or happy about the relationships I’ve developed through the shop. I’ve had regulars turn into friends turn into family. My goal for my second year was to learn the names of all my regulars so I can greet them when they come in.
One of my mentors from a previous job told me, “There’s enough business to go around.” That has really stuck with me. I am a huge believer in supporting everyone in my community. We’re all in this together.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I’ve never been a boss before but I’ve had a lot of jobs so I’ve definitely had a chance to learn what I do and don’t want to be.
More than anything, I want my staff to enjoy their job. That’s not to say that there won’t be tasks or days that aren’t always fun. But no one should be miserable in their job. I really try to be someone my staff can come to even if it’s not work related. I care about them! My shop wouldn’t run without them.
I know everyone has lives outside of work so I also try really hard to work with everyone’s school and personal schedules.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I try to maintain a “clean” look to my page. I keep things clear and to the point while also including a certain level of “cheesiness”
I share a lot of other local business posts and try to promote their places as much as possible.
I’m also as transparent as possible. I’m only human and sometimes people need to know that.
