We recently connected with Megan Hurdle and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Megan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Its not just one project but rather a series of commission pieces that I have been lucky to paint. I started painting gowns about 10 years ago and this lead me to the opportunity to paint special memories in my own way. I paint wedding gowns , christening gowns and graduation dresses. Artistically I love painting the intricate details of lace, fabrics and textiles but even more, I love painting the actual gown that will always be a memory of that special day. I suppose this all started with my own daughter. Watching her grow up, I wanted to preserve moments and milestones thru my paintings.

Megan , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a mixed media artist from Memphis tn. I have been a working artist for over 15 years and an artist all my life. I say this because as a little girl I remember wanting to spend all my time in my grandmothers art studio. I loved exploring her materials, working with different papers, paints and fabrics. I never dreamed of making a career with my art but somehow I did. As my confidence grew, I trusted myself to show my work and one small group show in 2010 led to multiple solo shows in Memphis, New Orleans and New York.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being creative is all I know. There is no where else I would rather be than creating in my studio. I am always exploring and always trying new ideas. My passion for making art comes from somewhere I can’t explain and the fact I can do something I love every day is the most rewarding aspect of being an artist.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I didn’t have to unlearn but rather learn something that I still practice daily and that is trust. Creating art is just executing an idea. I had to learn to trust myself. I had to learn to trust the process and know some ideas would fail and some would work.
