We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Megan Feighny a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I am a Nurse Practitioner and have worked pretty much only in hospitals and/or larger practices since graduating. I worked in Primary Care with primarily patients with mental health diagnoses for 5 years before setting off on my own. They decided to close down the primary care clinic and I was DEVASTATED. My patients were like family to me and that was super challenging to let go of so suddenly. I felt the loss, I cried, but I decided to take what I knew and carry on. It was working in Primary Care with underserved populations that taught me how inaccessible and broken healthcare truly was. I decided to take contracts in telemedicine where healthcare is more accessible. I also learned that so many entities that control healthcare don’t necessarily have the patient’s best interest in mind. So, I stopped working with insurance, and started offering more concierge type services through my own clinic. Granted, it’s a super small clinic and a small step, but I love giving my clients direct access to me. They know that they do not have to go through all the in between when they need something and that I will help them through whatever they are going through. It’s been super rewarding and super challenging all at the same time.
Megan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Nurse Practitioner and I offer telemedicine services, aesthetic services and wellness services. I feel like I fell into this almost by luck–I mean, obviously I did a lot of schooling first, but the current services I offer are not something I would have ever imagined. I landed here because of necessicity–needing flexibility in my schedule for family needs–and out of fascination. Once I went down the aesthetic and wellness rabbit hole, there was no turning back for me. I love to create individual client treatment plans to help the aging process be more comfortable and to boost overall wellness and confidence. I work individually with clients. It is literally just me and occasionally my husband helps. We are fully family owned and run and every client becomes a part of our life.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
100% word of mouth for me. I am VERY bad at marketing in my opinion, but when I do use social media, I post genuine, authentic content that makes people comfortable and know exactly what they are getting before even meeting me. Also, setting expectation ahead of time is huge.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think constantly staying educated and learning is key to this field. Things are ever evolving and it’s important to stay on top of things. I am constantly training, reading research, or learning about new treatments and new ways to provide the best evidence based care.
