We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Megan & Emily. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Megan & Emily below.
Hi Megan & Emily, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
We both attended Kent State University’s fashion program. We have always been passionate about the intersection of sustainability and fashion. The average American throws away around 82 pounds of textiles annually. We wanted to create a business that takes discarded clothes and turns them into something modern and new again, ultimately keeping them in circularity and out of landfills.
Megan & Emily, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
At Salvage Apparel Co, we offer mens and womens one of a kind upcycled and vintage clothes. Our mission is to give clothes a second life by redesigning them to feel new and special again. We want to keep clothes in circularity and inspire others to think about how their clothing consumption impacts the environment.
How’d you meet your business partner?
We met at Kent State University’s fashion program! Emily studied fashion design and Megan studied fashion merchandising and sustainability. We merged our passions and created our small business, Salvage Apparel Co!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We started our small business in Columbus, Ohio. We knew that re-commerce and the secondhand market was a rapidly growing industry, but we didn’t see anyone offering Upcycled fashion in our city. We wanted to be one of the first businesses to tap into this space. One of the things that sets us apart is our knowledge of garment construction, from our university experience. A lot of people think of upcyclers as just DIY-ers. We strategically plan out our designs to have as minimal textile waste as possible and focus on the quality of the redesign.
