We recently connected with Megan Davidson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
It all kicked off when I found myself unexpectedly back home from college due to the sudden impact of Covid. With just two months left before my anticipated graduation, I went from being a D1 student athlete with a job lined up to having none of those certainties. It was a bit of an identity crisis, armed only with an economics degree and minors in marketing and psychology. No plans, no defined path to follow.
After a few months of job hunting in the midst of the pandemic, I hit a dead end. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities, I had an idea: why not start my own business? The idea seemed absurd at first as most of my family and friends had 9 to 5 jobs, but as I observed local businesses grappling with the shift to online marketing, I saw an opportunity.
In a moment of spontaneity in September 2020, I launched my own business. Little did I know the complexities involved. Taxes, licenses, fictitious business names, building a brand – it was a steep learning curve. My initial clients were family friends, and although small, they fueled my excitement for this new venture.
I navigated the intricacies of creating a website, packaging services, but acquiring long-term clients remained elusive. However, landing some incredible clients who were a joy to work with made it all worthwhile. Initially managing social media accounts, I reveled in the tangible results my clients experienced.
Then, my passion shifted. I realized I loved the strategy behind the content creation process, guiding business owners from ideation to posting and witnessing the results firsthand. This realization led me to transition from managing to consulting & coaching social media.
In this role, I discovered the thrill of empowering business owners to implement their own strategies, acknowledging that they are the true experts in their fields. I went a step further, creating a course that guides business owners in building effective Instagram strategies to convert followers into clients. Launching this course was a significant win, transforming the concept of starting a business into a tangible plan of action aimed at helping local business owners thrive.
Megan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My journey into the dynamic world of social media and business began during the height of Covid in 2020. Armed with an economics degree and minors in marketing and psychology, I found myself back home, facing an uncertain future.
Observing local businesses struggling with the challenges of adapting to online marketing, I seized the opportunity to start my own business. Since then, I’ve evolved to offer a range of services tailored to the unique needs of my clients.
For those aiming to elevate their Instagram game, my ‘Instagram Pro Bootcamp’ is designed to transform followers into clients. This step by step course breaks down the intricacies of building a winning Instagram strategy, empowers you to maximize your online presence, and turn your followers into clients.
In addition, I offer personalized one-on-one sessions for businesses seeking more specific guidance. It’s important to note that I don’t work one-on-one with every business, ensuring focused and impactful collaborations.
What sets me apart is not just the services I offer, but the passion I bring to helping businesses thrive. I transitioned from managing social media accounts to consulting and coaching, realizing the importance of letting business owners show off their specific expertise and have fun creating content that will attract clients who want to work with them.
Now I teach overwhelmed, service-based business owners how to transform from frustrated and confused Instagram users into confident, excited Instagram Pros. Work with me to consistently share your expertise on Instagram, attract quality clients, and elevate your positive influence, propelling your business to the next level of growth.
In essence, I’m here to provide a comprehensive approach to social media success, offering services, courses, and personal guidance. Whether it’s through creating captivating content, mastering Instagram strategies, or working one-on-one, I’m dedicated to helping my clients increase their online impact, their confidence, and have fun while doing it!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has been from two places. One, of course, is Instagram. It is where I am teaching other business owners to get clients and it also happens to be where I get a lot of my clients as well. Instagram is a platform with one of the highest engagement rates. It also is a very visual platform that makes it fun to show off your skills and expertise in a creative way.
The other main source of clients I get is from local networking groups. I joined networking groups right away after starting my business, and have only joined more and more since then. Not only does it help me increase my public speaking skills, my confidence, and my elevator pitch, it also fosters new relationships within my local community. I found that people naturally want to support someone who is local to them and by building these relationships you reap the benefits long-term.
For anyone else out there starting a business I would say that using social media to your advantage is key for immediate results, and joining networking groups is key for long-term growth and development. Most of the business owners in these groups are much older and more experienced, and are more than willing to help guide and mentor you through starting your own business. The main similarity between them both is that you do have to be consistent. You can’t do either of them for just one month and decide it’s not working and quit. You won’t get any of the benefits if you don’t put in the work.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There are three books that stand out to me when considering what has made the biggest impact on me during my entrepreneurial journey. They are “You Are A Badass” by Jen Sincero, “$100M Offers” by Alex Hormozi, and “It Takes What It Takes” by Trevor Moawad. Each of these books not only offer insight into what success can look like, but the authors provide a mindset shift that forces you to look at your own situation with a new perspective. I would highly recommend them.
