We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Megan Coghlan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Megan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you have any advice regarding quality control and maintaining quality as your brand grows?
Backcourt Marketing is a social media business and social media content creation is a time-consuming task. Very quickly into starting this business, I learned there was only so much I could do on my own time.
Something that business owners need to know as they grow is that not every client or customer is going to respond to your growth the same way. I had clients worry that they weren’t going to receive the same personalized service that I could provide myself and that the quality of work would decrease. My best advice is to listen to their valid concerns and be extra communicative with them.
Show your customers why your growth is going to benefit them and what it means for their potential of success working with you. You have to understand their concerns and address every one of them if you want to grow successfully and provide a service that people will love.
Finally, as you hire people, hire those who have the same core values of your business. That will ultimately reflect on the quality of service your business can provide. Otherwise, customers will absolutely notice the difference.
Megan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Backcourt Marketing is a social media marketing agency that is based in Phoenix, Arizona and serves clients worldwide. I started it not only because content creation and creative writing are things I love to do, but because businesses of all shapes and sizes need someone reliable to handle their online presence. A business owner has their head in the weeds and doesn’t have the time that it takes to create a strategic social media presence that is going to get them sales and make their brand stand out above competitors. Backcourt Marketing steps in as the team to defend your brand, assist you, and help you score.
Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?
When COVID hit and all things got canceled in that one terrible week, I lost 75% of my clientele in one day. Businesses and their finance teams went into panic mode and closed all contracts and put marketing on hold. I had to keep going (what else was my option?).
I restructured a lot of my services, got my team together, and went into full sales mode ahead. We adjusted my messaging and tried all kinds of marketing tactics we had never tried before. Some worked, some didn’t, but within a few months, we lifted our client roster even higher than it had been before. I know everyone has wild stories from this particular time in history, but I have to pat myself on the back for that one. We all should for what we’ve overcome.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I like to focus on quality over quantity. When building a social media strategy, a business has to be laser-focused on its target audience. What social media platforms do they use? What are their interests and what do they NOT like?
Build a following that fits your exact target audience description. And please…do NOT buy followers. Everyone will know and it doesn’t do your business any good. When we build an audience for a client, we pick the platforms their audience is most active on and use the tools that they like. We interact with the pages related to their interests and catch their attention in subtle ways. This builds a captive audience that is truly interested in what you have to post.
Be realistic about who you’re speaking to. Maybe your audience isn’t even tech-savvy and doesn’t use social media often. If that’s the case, get on Facebook and just show up for them consistently, even if it is only once a week.
