We recently connected with Megan Chavers and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve always been a naturally creative person, and knew that whatever I did in life, I wanted it to be something artistic, or where I could flex my creative muscles. I’ve always loved fashion, style, art, theatre and photograpy. Some of my earliest memories are stealing the shoes and clothes from my mom’s closet and putting on my own personal runway show. My degree is actually in acting, and for a while I was a professional working actor around the Chicago area, up until the pandemic hit. Through that career, I’ve always loved style, and felt passionate about creating more space in the fashion world for plus-sized women. When influencers and content creators were coming on the scene more and more, I felt a huge pull towards that career, as well. During the COVID lockdown, I was given the opportunity to sit down and really decide it being a plus-size content creator was what I wanted to pursue. I asked myself, if not now then when? And from there I started to make it happen, step by step.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been a lover of style and fashion, but often grew frustrated at the lack of space and visibility for plus-sized women. I noticed it especially when content creators and influencers came on the social media scene. The ratio of “standard” size fashion creators to plus-size was extremely unbalanced, and struggled to find myself in the pages I would scroll every day. I began to feel more and more like “why not me?”. And so Follow The Curve began. On my social media pages, I strive to create a community of inclusivity and acceptance. No matter what you look like, or the size of your waistline, you always have a home at Follow The Curve. I show up for the people who don’t feel seen in this industry.
I’m so proud of how far I’ve come with Follow The Curve! Not even just follower count and numbers-wise, but the community that I’m building, and the voice that’s behind my work. A lot of times I have to battle against the feeling of “does anyone even care?”, but time and time again I’ve proven that self-doubt wrong.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I know that influencers and content creators get a bad reputation, but it’s like the old saying goes – don’t let one bad apple spoil the bunch. A lot of us out here grinding out content and trying to grow our communities are doing it because we feeling passionate about something. We love connecting with other people, sharing different view points, and maybe even hoping to change the way we look at the world! It’s also extremely vulnerable showing up on social media, ESPECIALLY as a plus-sized woman. The bullies and keyboard warrios are REAL, and they love to use their own insecurities to tear other people down. Be kind. A lot of people don’t really understand how vulnerable and nerve-wracking it is until you do it yourself. There’s a real human on the other side of the screen, working really really hard to get their content out there and make their voice heard.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My biggest goal behind Follow The Curve is to create more space and visibility for plus-sized women in the fashion industry. It’s high time that the fashion industry opened its eyes and realized that real women come in lots of different shapes and sizes, and we want to be heard! Just because we wear a size 22 doesn’t mean that we love style any less, and that we should only be subjected to wearing potato sack dresses. I’m so excited to grow my community and platform with my social media pages and blog. The digital content creation community is growing bigger every single day, and I’m so excited to be part of a change this way!
