We recently connected with Megan Cashmore and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I grew up a big dreamer in a small town. I used to tell people that one day I would own a yacht or have my own company and most people laughed. However, that didn’t bother me because it gave me something to look forward to when I grew up. As I got older and started working, I realized a lot of people were trying to bring me back down to earth because I was dreaming too big. It was frustrating and it still is because I’ve seen many people do the things I was trying to do so why couldn’t I do it too? I realized most people just dream too small.
I am now a yacht broker who also owns a clothing company called Somewhere On A Yacht (S.O.A.Y.). I created Somewhere On A Yacht to inspire people to take their dreams to paradise and this is how I do just that. Somewhere On A Yacht is a clothing company for big dreamers, hard workers, and yachters. I design high-quality clothes inspired by some of the most iconic yachts in the world, as fashion and yachting are both a passion of mine.
The way Somewhere On A Yacht motivates our customers is by the vision we have and the marketing we do. We aren’t just here to bless people with lovely attire, we are here to motivate people to take dreams to paradise. Our marketing shows the beauty of dreaming big. As I work with yacht owners and buyers often, I know how possible it is to achieve your dreams. Whether that dream is raising a happy healthy family, changing the world, or sailing the sea on a yacht, Somewhere On A Yacht is here to let you know it is possible. Not only does Somewhere On A Yacht provide our customers with luxury attire to go hustle the day in, but we also strive to motivate and dream big with them through our storytelling. It’s not about selling attire, it’s about the dream we have all chased since we were young.
Somewhere On A Yacht is a community that supports go-getters, big dreamers, and people who find pride in dressing nice. Next time you find yourself dreaming of being Somewhere On A Yacht, know dreaming big is key, and working hard makes it possible. From Dreams To Paradise, Somewhere On A Yacht is here to change the fashion industry as well as change the limit to our customer’s dreams. That is our mission and we love seeing our customers do just that.
Megan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Megan Cashmore and I am a business owner of Somewhere On A Yacht as well as a yacht broker. I got into the yachting industry through my parents as they were boaters. We grew up sailing the ocean with our family and friends from Alaska to Mexico. Some of my favorite memories growing up were on the ocean. I figured it would be fun to get people to experience the same memories I had growing up. That is when I started working in yachting. I started interning with companies in college then got hired to run social media for Dension Yachting. A few years into the industry I now book my clients on multimillion-dollar yachts to go sail the world and live the same memories I was blessed to experience as a kid. I currently work with TJB Super Yachts as a yacht sales and charter broker.
As a yacht broker, you need to know the industry, build your clientele, and maintain relationships with your clients. As I was thinking of ways to build my clientele, I figured TikTok was a good way to do that. I started by doing the TikTok dance trends on yachts. Believe it or not, those took off. I then started showing the lifestyle of yachting on my TikTok page and people gravitated to that as well. I started thinking that thousands of people were watching my videos, but not everyone is ready to buy or charter a yacht. What else could I offer my followers that isn’t as ambitious as buying a yacht?
One morning I was sailing the crystal blue ocean in the Bahamas for work. I was in complete paradise and it’s because my dreams had taken me there. Right then it hit me, Somewhere On A Yacht (From Dreams To Paradise). I can offer my followers luxury boating attire, a vision, and a reason to dream big. That is when Somewhere On A Yacht was born and later launched in February 2023. I have my second line dropping before the holidays and as the company begins to grow so do my designs.
I love the fact that I get to inspire the world to dream big! I would have never thought I would be booking my lovely clients on multimillion-dollar yachts around the world for the vacation of a lifetime, or selling a client their first yacht for the best memories one could ask for, or even launching a clothing line based on yachting and big dreams! The world has endless possibilities and you were designed to create that dream you were born with.
Don’t think it’ll come easy because it won’t, but know when it does come true it’s a feeling you will never forget.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I believe most entrepreneurs will understand this one but one thing I had to unlearn was the limits teachers tried to put on me. I was not a straight-A student and I didn’t approve of everything my teachers tried to teach us. I remember one day in class we were doing a career assignment and my teacher gave me the lovely career of being a garbage truck driver. This wasn’t what I had in mind but hey, I was still making money. Our career papers had the income we made on them. We then got to decide everything we wanted to spend our money on such as a house, a car, toys, etc. Well, my income from being a garbage truck driver was very low compared to my friends who were doctors. The only thing I could afford that I really wanted was a boat. So, I bought a boat with my money and only a boat. My teacher told me I couldn’t afford the boat, I told her I could because I don’t want a house, I am going to live on my boat. Of course, the teacher said that wasn’t allowed, I needed a house but I fought for my boat and got a bad score on the assignment.
My teachers were constantly putting my thinking in a box. The only time I got to think out of the box was when I forgot to study for a test and had to figure out a way to get out of class that day. The schooling system made me feel dumb at a young age so I grew up thinking I wasn’t very smart. I even had a teacher wish me good luck in getting into college. Don’t worry, I got accepted into every college I applied for and had good enough grades to dance on the dance team. Once I got to college and started working in the real world, I realized I wasn’t dumb and that I was actually smart compared to a lot of people.
The moral of the story is you will always have people trying to tell you you can’t do it, you are dumb, you’re not good enough, not pretty enough, not talented enough, etc. However, I can promise you one thing, you are everything you say and think you are not what others say you are! If you’re going to be a successful business owner, make millions of dollars, and change the world for the better then you absolutely are. NEVER let someone tell you what or who you are. If I had done that, I would have never left my hometown and chased the dreams I’ve been chasing.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
When it comes to dreaming big you are constantly learning. Learning how to become the person you need to become, learning how to start and grow your company, and learning how to deal with other people. Whatever your “big dream” is, you should always be learning.
I have always loved reading self-help books. That is the only thing I would read, everything else (except the Bible) was a waste of time to me. I have a few books that really changed my thinking and helped me grow that I will mention later but I also love a good podcast or YouTube video. My favorite time for podcasts is when I’m at the gym. I feel like if I’m pushing my body, my brain is getting pushed as well. Once a week I listen to Vous church Pastor Rich Wilkerson and on the other days I listen to Jay Shetty, Joe Dispenza, Tony Robins, or suggested videos from YouTube about entrepreneurship/business. Those are all key people to start changing the way you think and bettering yourself.
The books that have changed my life are, Power Vs. Force, The Art Of The Deal, the Bible, You Are A Bada**, Becoming Supernatural, Unfu** Yourself, Think And Grow Rich, The Obstacle In The Way, Crazy Faith and The 48 Laws Of Power. I highly recommend reading these books. You will never regret growing yourself. Like they say, the day you stop learning is the day you stop living.
