We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Megan Cardet a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
A tiny miniature horse orphaned in the slaughter pipeline started my journey of saving America’s horses. We named her Peanut and A Place for Peanut was born. The mission of A Place for Peanut is to educate the public and bring joy to children, veterans in hospitals, and special programs through equine therapy with our miniature horses that have been rescued from the slaughter pipeline.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Megan Cardet is a lifelong equestrian who is moving heaven and earth to rescue equines from kill pens. Most of the public is unaware that kill pens exist, let alone the horrors that await unwanted horses. They are sent to Mexico to be slaughtered and their meat is sold to foreign countries. This gruesome death sentence begins when they are dumped at a kill pen. Megan’s goal is to bring awareness to the public and to change laws pertaining to the American Safeguard Act. In addition to saving and rehabbing horses, some go onto fabulous homes while others are part of the therapy program of APFP giving back to children with cancer.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My co-founder, the late great Houston sportscaster, Bob Allen was not only my fiancé, he named our non profit we formed together, A Place for Peanut. He had a passion for helping children with cancer and our goal was to not only save the horses from an inhumane death but to rehabilitate them and use them as therapy for those very children.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A Place for Peanut was formed in January 0f 2016. In April of 2016 the tax day flood happened and not only wiped out our rescue but left us without a home for 20 plus horses. God always provides for those who are servant leaders and continue the mission they were called to do. We were able to rebuild only a few months later replacing all that was lost including a new fabulous and safe home for our herd.

I’ve known Megan for 20 plus years and yet she never ceases to amaze me! I’m so proud of her and the rescues she has saved. I call her The Horse Whisperer. She has a gift to heal these beautiful animals that come from such cruel abandonment and/or abuse. Well done my friend!!!
