We were lucky to catch up with Megan Black recently and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, appreciate you joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I started really getting into taking photos almost 5 years ago, after my daughters 1st birthday session went south I decided to pick up an old camera I had and take her out my self the next day and fell in love capturing those memories my self! I have always had an interest in photography but never thought I could make a living out of it! I wish I would have started way sooner… its one of those things where you just have to believe in your self and take risks! After working a full time job and doing photography on the side I was able to quit my 9-5 job about 2 years ago and go full time with photography!!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Im Megan, a wife, and a mom of two sweet babies. I have always been into taking photos ever since I was a teenager, but I really got into this profession in 2017. I would take anyone as a client that would let me build my portfolio, from newborns, to families, seniors, couples, kids. I decided to take the leap and go full time in 2020, after having that security of a steady income every two weeks, to not knowing how things would go right in the middle of Covid was a pretty scary thing to do!! As of today, I am so glad I decided to take that leap! I love every single session I do, and all of the people I get to meet. I have some of the best friends now because of photography. Its so hard to stand out from the crowd in this industry, I believe word of mouth is the best thing going for me! I love making my clients feel so good about themselves, and making them feel comfortable in front of the camera is a big deal! ill be your biggest hype girl during your session with me :)
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social media is the best source of getting new clients for me! Specifically Instagram. Word of mouth is pretty big for me as well!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
If you’re just starting out and wanting to grow your social media I would recommend reaching out to local vendors that you love and going in together on Giveaways! Its easy, you gain more followers, and potentially get new clients out of it!
