We recently connected with Megan Behrens and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
In the ever-evolving world of interior design, certain elements and styles emerge as trends, capturing the imagination of designers and homeowners alike. The 3 that we have seen this year and will continue into 2024 are fluted cabinets, appliance garages, and warmer neutrals.
Fluted Cabinets:
Texture and Depth: Fluted cabinets introduce a tactile and visually interesting element to interior spaces. The vertical grooves create a sense of texture and depth, adding character to otherwise plain surfaces.
Sophistication and Elegance: The rhythmic patterns of fluted cabinets convey a touch of sophistication and elegance. This design feature has the ability to elevate the overall aesthetic of a space, making it more refined and interesting.
Versatility: Fluted cabinets are incredibly versatile. They can be incorporated in various styles, from modern to traditional, seamlessly blending into different design schemes.
Appliance Garages:
Clutter-Free Spaces: One of the key advantages of appliance garages is their ability to keep kitchen countertops clutter-free. By providing a dedicated space to hide small appliances like toasters, blenders, and coffee makers, appliance garages contribute to a clean and organized kitchen.
Seamless Integration: Appliance garages are designed to seamlessly integrate with cabinetry, maintaining a cohesive look in the kitchen. This integration contributes to a streamlined and modern aesthetic.
Efficient Use of Space: These garages make efficient use of space by concealing appliances when not in use, ensuring that the kitchen remains visually appealing without sacrificing functionality.
Warmer Neutrals:
Cozy Atmosphere: Warm neutrals, including shades of beige, tan, and greige, create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. These colors evoke a sense of comfort and warmth, making spaces feel more intimate and welcoming.
Timelessness: Unlike some trendy colors that may quickly go out of style, warmer neutrals have a timeless quality. They serve as a versatile backdrop, allowing for easy integration of different decor elements and styles.
Flexibility in Design: Warm neutrals provide a neutral foundation that can be paired with a variety of accent colors and materials. This flexibility in design makes them a popular choice for homeowners seeking a classic and enduring palette.
In summary, these emerging trends in interior design offer a harmonious blend of visual appeal, functionality, and versatility. Fluted cabinets, appliance garages, and warmer neutrals have found favor among designers and homeowners for their ability to transform spaces into aesthetically pleasing, organized, and inviting environments.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Embarking on a journey from the architectural familiarity of Chicago to the captivating allure of Phoenix, I found myself captivated by the stucco and red roof tiles that stood in stark contrast to the traditional brick aesthetic of my former city. The interiors, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces, became a source of fascination for me.
Yet, it was a twist of fate that led me to discover my true calling. In our first year in Arizona, my husband and I, newlyweds and expecting twins, faced unexpected job losses. Despite my earnest efforts in job interviews, I felt the sting of discrimination, pushing me towards a career change. Armed with a master’s in accounting and a background in sales, I decided to pursue my newfound passion for design, enrolling myself in design school. Little did I know, this decision would change the course of my life.
In the initial years of motherhood, I chose to work part-time with a contractor, delving into the intricacies of construction. This invaluable experience not only honed my skills but also taught me the nuances of supporting both contractors and clients. As the twins turned three, I felt a renewed sense of readiness to dive deeper into my passion. Joining a builder’s team full time boosted my confidence and ultimately paved the way for me to establish my own design firm.
While I cherished the construction aspect of my work, I yearned for a more comprehensive creative outlet. This led me to venture into furniture design, allowing me to explore the delicate interplay of fabrics and space planning.
My husband often describes me as relentless, a quality that has become the driving force behind my business. I lose track of time when immersed in the creative process, tirelessly working until the envisioned design comes to life. Through this unwavering pursuit, I’ve cultivated a team that mirrors my commitment and creativity.
The pride I feel for my business is twofold – in the team I’ve built and the clients we’ve had the privilege to work with. The majority of our clients come through referrals, a testament to our reputation for truly listening to and executing our clients’ design dreams. We don’t just guide; we collaborate, creating a team where the beauty of design is shared.
In reflecting on this journey, I find inspiration in the challenges that propelled me toward a fulfilling career in design. The success of my business stands as a testament to the transformative power of embracing passion, weathering challenges, and creating spaces that resonate with the unique visions of our clients.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I foster a familial atmosphere within my team, where closeness and genuine connections are paramount. Understanding what’s happening in their lives and how they perceive different aspects of our business is crucial to me. We conduct quarterly reviews, turning these discussions into enjoyable occasions, such as treating ourselves to a pedicure.
Communication is the cornerstone of our team dynamic. Regular and open dialogue ensures that there are no surprises during our reviews, creating an environment of transparency and mutual understanding. I believe that maintaining this constant flow of communication is key to a well-functioning and harmonious work culture.
Family involvement is a core value for me. My commitment extends to having my own family contribute to the business. It warms my heart to see my girls swing by the office after school, sharing snacks and showcasing their latest art creations. Their thoughtfulness extends beyond the workplace, always mindful of the team’s preferences and needs. Whether it’s remembering that Alex’s favorite color is blue and picking up a matching vase or recognizing Yliana’s upcoming wedding and gathering bridal essentials, they embody a spirit of care and consideration.
Even my husband plays a role, seamlessly stepping in to assist with assembling items for our clients or providing technical support for our office devices. It’s a collaborative effort, and everyone, including my family, plays a unique part in creating a supportive and efficient work environment.
