Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Megan Bee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Megan , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
This year I hosted my first writing retreat, Words In The Hills. I’ve been a full-time touring singer-songwriter for years, but before that I worked as an environmental educator. I love the magic of camp; coming together in a new space, meeting new friends, exploring the outdoors, trying something new, making memories. I have been leading songwriting workshops for a while. I finally combined my love of writing, teaching, camping, and people into one beautiful weekend. The feedback was very validating. Writers that came expressed that they had been looking for something like this. It’s meaningful to me because I could give back to the writing community in a unique way. It feels so much bigger than my own creative projects when a whole community bonds together over creating.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a singer-songwriter who tours regularly, records, and teaches. My music is influenced by Appalachian folk and modern songwriting. I use lots of metaphor and imagery from the natural world in my lyrics. I have a background teaching environmental education and have travelled the country volunteering on organic farms. I also teach songwriting. I love working with kids. This year I hosted my first adult writing retreat, Words In The Hills.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
As a creative I have to wear many hats. Creative work can seem fun and mysterious, but behind every show is a string of booking emails, a phone call, a bunch of rehearsals, a website design, a color-coded calendar, etc. When I’m running my business I’m very organized. But my main job is to be creative. The real boss is the writer and she gets to make the calls on the whole thing. I try to keep that in focus and keep the creative process first and foremost. It is a leap of faith to work a creative job. There are no real guarantees. Every success is a hard earned blessing. I feel lucky to get to be create and make a living from it. If somehow I couldn’t make a living from it anymore I would still create. That is the thing. If you love it that much it just comes out of you and you can’t not do it.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a songwriter is connecting with people. When I share a song that is true to my heart and someone else connects with it in a profound way we’ve reached a deeper level of existing together. Also, as a teacher, helping kids write their own songs is one of the most beautiful things. I love giving people the encouragement and tools to express themselves and then watch their song come to life.
