We recently connected with Meg Nunes and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Meg, thanks for joining us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
Whenever you’re starting out in business, it’s so important to continue to make natural connections & relationships. I found myself showing up in spaces amongst various yoga studios & local events to find like minded people. I would offer free 5-10 minute reiki sessions with headphones at holiday vendor fairs; I would add reiki healing to my yoga classes so people could experience the healing benefits in a safe & comfortable space & maybe get them thinking about how an actual in depth session might feel. I just tried to give people a taste of my energetic offerings, show people who I was / am — the space I was holding, the healing I was providing & that’s how I started to find my people! Ten years later, I’ve built a wonderful community. I’ve seen people come & go, & come back again! Evolve, shift, change, move even across the country. It’s so amazing to see people transform their minds, bodies, energy & nervous systems as well as their entire lives around this healing work. It’s magic to witness!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I found yoga in my mid-late teens & only became more consistent in my early 20’s. It was divine intervention how yoga & energy work came into my life in 2014 — my grandpa had passes from ALS & I witnessed how reiki healing helped him so much in his illness. I enrolled in a 200hr yoga teacher training prior to his passing & I was ridden with grief, not knowing how I would carry on in this program. I was only empowered & supported to continue to show up & it really helped me to keep myself moving, learning, unfolding. I’ve now been doing yoga & energy work for 10 years this year — alongside many other hats I wear, I’m not only a sister, a friend, a wife, a yoga teacher, a reiki healer but I’ve landed in the space of social media as a health & wellness influencer. I share advice, real life, thrift hauls, my love of coffee, gluten & dairy free food recommendations, cannabis, & so much more. I’ve been able to reach people near & far with my humor, unfiltered-ness, & knowledge. I left my 5 year career at lululemon to pursue working for myself again, full time in 2022 & it really has been such an amazing blessing to witness the positive power that social media CAN hold! I think what sets me apart is that what you see is entirely what you get — there is no “persona”, it’s me. I am my own person & my own brand, not everyone will like it & that’s okay! But authenticity is so important in all of my limbs of being & work. Transparency & vulnerability can hold so much power in this space of “influencing”. I want to influence others to be kind, loving, & the best versions of them for THEM. Not to be me, but to be their truest selves. Not to do yoga or energy work but to just get to know themselves well enough that they unveil their own passions & take their life by the reigns & no longer play small with their own souls. I also love sharing & working with other small businesses, especially woman owned & I think that’s even more important in a world full of over-consumption. My content, my life — it’s all very intentional & mindful & that’s what I hope gets across to those that follow along on the journey.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
It may sound cliche, but truly & fully — just be YOU. When we focus so much on “niche’s” & curated content, we are missing so much of what people actually crave in this world & that is what is real. To be seen, heard, understood as we are & not in some fantasy realm. I have truly fallen in love with my life & that involves maintaining a positive mindset, not what car I drive or how much money I make. Being RICH is an abundant mindset. It’s the feeling I get being with my loved ones, or going to grab a coffee, or meeting one of my “followers” who are really like friends! Social media can totally be a highlight reel, a trap, a downward spiral into a rabbit hole of comparison, fear, doubt. I’ve really found my greatest successes but staying true to myself which is not an easy thing to do in general, let alone in the social media space. But I really think it’s true & important & that’s why I continue to exist in these online spaces because I am different than other people, I will not sell you something I wouldn’t buy myself. I am very intentional in what I say yes & no to & it has kept me from a lot of opportunities & yet so many other opportunities have come too! Its hard to stay true & to trust, but I think its of utmost importance in our ever changing society. There are young girls looking for guidance, role models & I work every day to make my younger self proud in hopes that maybe, just maybe it’ll inspire someone else to do the same for themselves. So in sum — be you & the more you that you are, you’ll never run out of content & you’ll always find your people.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being consistent, truthful, & trustworthy. Again with authenticity & real-ness — that in itself builds authentic relationships. And when you build authentic relationships, that means everything to a small business. That’s what keeps people coming back time & time again wether it’s for yoga events, energy sessions, shopping the links I share, it’s because of the authenticity behind it all, the trust & the bonds that are made!
