We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Meg Geisewite a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Meg, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Meg never hit a “rock bottom.”
Most people think that in order to acknowledge and address a drinking problem, you must first hit rock bottom, but this heartfelt story reveals the truth that gray area drinking comes in many shades. Alcohol consumption exists on a spectrum with a vast range of dependency in the middle. Gray area drinking unconsciously haunts most people until it becomes a problem. Our society is inundated with messages that support unhealthy drinking habits, just one of the many insidious lies of alcohol.
In Intoxicating Lies, you will find the relatable story of one mom’s journey to freedom—not only from gray area drinking but also from the shame and guilt that crushed her sense of worth and inner knowing. This book uncovers surprising insights into the alcohol industry and our society’s obsession with the mommy wine culture.
With practical advice and friendly wisdom from a mom who has seen it all, this book should be every woman’s guide to living in authentic freedom from alcohol’s intoxicating lies.
This heartfelt story explores one woman’s struggles with gray area drinking, the challenges that all gray area drinkers face in finding help and hope, and the journey to freedom not just from alcohol but also from the cultural expectations that normalize unhealthy habits.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Meg is an ordinary mom who found herself trapped in the mommy wine culture. She began her sober-curious journey in November of 2019 where her love of science led her to discover the real truth about alcohol and its seductive lies. Flipping the script of silence in the mommy wine culture, Meg continues to give back to Sober Sis, a SoberMinded Sisterhood, and is dedicated to lifting up a community of women who find themselves trapped in gray area drinking.
In Meg’s debut book, Intoxicating Lies, Meg exposes the five most common lies we tell ourselves about alcohol. Meg takes us through her sober curious journey and the freedom that she gained from it. Meg resides in Delaware with her husband and two teenage children. Her family has been her rock throughout her alcohol-free journey. You can often find Meg enjoying nature on the beautiful biking trails of Delaware.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I wished this book was available when I was stuck in the “Detox just to Retox” loop with gray area drinking. I felt alone and crazy in my relationship with alcohol. Everyone told me my drinking looked so-called “normal” but inside my head a real war was raging on about my toxic relationship with alcohol.
I want to free as many women as possible from the mommy wine culture and gray area drinking. My goal and mission are to spread the awareness about the truths about alcohol and how it is not self-care or a solution to our problems. The goal of my book is to increase awareness about gray area drinking, encourage sober curiosity and to the lose the stigma surrounding it. My hope is that Intoxicating Lies will help women explore their relationship with alcohol and to get curious if alcohol is really adding or subtracting from them becoming the best version of themselves.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The books that led me on my sober curious journey include: The Naked Mind by Annie Grace, Alcohol Explained by William Porter, Quit Like A Woman by Holly Whitaker, Untamed by Glennon Doyle and The Easy Way to Quit Drinking by Allan Carr.
