We were lucky to catch up with Meg Fox recently and have shared our conversation below.
Meg, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am very happy as an artist! It’s still work of course, but every other job I have ever had I have gotten in some kind of trouble for doodling or daydreaming when I should have been working.
In high school I worked for a gym. When I was sitting at the front desk, I would often draw entire scenes on the back of the sign in sheets. My boss would always say for the time it took me to draw these intricate doodles, I could have cleaned the whole locker room!
Sometimes I think I would be happy as a park ranger or some other job where I spend all day outdoors, but I can still go hiking on the weekends!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an artist for video games! I basically act as the “swiss army artist” on the teams I work for. I can do a little bit of everything in the art pipeline: Concept art, storyboarding, puppeting, 3D modeling, rigging, animation, and VFX.
I originally just wanted to be an animator, but when it came time to choose one thing to specialize in, I couldn’t decide! Now I act as a generalist to help every part of the pipeline.
On top of the two studios I work for, I am also making a card game! It’s called “Magic Borbs” and it will be a physical and digital card game you could play in person or on a mobile device. The basic gist of the game is you will play round magical birds (borbs) that can evolve into different levels of wizard. You are competing in a duel with your opponent. For each borb you beat in a duel you get a certain number of gold coins. When all the coins are gone the player with the most wins!
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
One of the games I’m working on is based on NFTs! I think they have a lot of potential to be a very cool thing, but the idea of them has been ruined for many by scam artists and thieves. Very unfortunate. I think they could add a whole new level of fun to videogames by incorporating that “collecting valuables” aspect. That’s part of why I love Pokemon Cards and other nostalgic old physical games.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I had hired a mentor much earlier than I did. Mentorships are incredibly valuable. I was mentored by the concept artist Nicholas Kole, and my skill level as a concept artist grew incredibly quickly with his guidance. All it takes is the courage to ask nicely if your favorite artist will mentor you, they may surprise you by saying yes! Always offer to pay your mentor their normal rate, and make sure you set a time limit to the mentorship. Mine was 6 months long. If you are paying for the mentorship, you are much more likely to make the most of it.
