We were lucky to catch up with Meg Duke recently and have shared our conversation below.
Meg, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
As a therapist, I believe in a collaborative approach, where I don’t prescribe advice but rather guide individuals through a process of self-discovery.
*To protect client confidentiality, I have put together an amalgam of client experiences for pith and clarity.
One of the most pivotal moments was when I worked with a client navigating a significant career transition. Rather than offering direct advice, I facilitated a space where the client explored their own strengths, values, and aspirations. By asking thought-provoking questions and allowing them to lead the conversation, they discovered their own reservoir of resilience and insight.
Change is a common struggle for many, and this case exemplifies how mental health support can be instrumental in navigating life’s transitions. By fostering a space of exploration and reflection, utilizing a growth mindset, the client realized the power of reframing setbacks and began to see challenges as opportunities for growth. This shift in perspective enabled them to approach their situation with renewed determination and a sense of possibility.
Witnessing this transformation underscored the profound impact of mental health work in aiding individuals to navigate change. By empowering them to recognize their own strengths and resilience, it not only facilitated their journey but also led to personal and professional growth. This example highlights the value of mental health support in helping individuals manage and thrive amidst life’s inevitable changes.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello, readers! I’m thrilled to share a bit about myself and the diverse array of offerings within my Amplify Wellness practice. My journey into the mental wellness space began with a deep-seated passion for helping individuals navigate the complexities of their lives. I am a mental health practitioner, specializing in therapy and mental wellness coaching. I’m also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Kansas Graduate School of Social Welfare.
In addition to my one-on-one therapy sessions, I’ve expanded my reach through various avenues. “The Perinatal Podcast” is a project close to my heart, focusing on the mental health journey during trying to conceive, fertility issues, pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond, providing valuable insights and support for individuals and families through thoughtful conversations with expert guests.
Recognizing the importance of accessible and comprehensive mental health resources, I’ve developed mental health courses tailored to different needs. The “Distraction Buster Planner & Course” is designed to equip individuals with practical tools to manage distractions and enhance focus. Meanwhile, the “Navigating Healthy Boundaries Course” delves into the crucial skill of setting and maintaining healthy boundaries, a cornerstone for mental well-being.
What sets me apart is a holistic approach that integrates therapeutic techniques, coaching strategies, and mindfulness practices in a solution-focused manner. I aim to not only address immediate concerns but also empower individuals with the tools needed for long-term well-being.
I take immense pride in the positive transformations I’ve witnessed in my clients’ lives. Knowing I’ve played a part in their journey towards mental wellness is incredibly fulfilling. My commitment extends beyond the therapy room; it’s about fostering a community where mental health is prioritized, stigma is dismantled, and individuals are empowered to lead fulfilling lives.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that my work is grounded in empathy, expertise, and a genuine dedication to supporting mental health. Whether through personalized therapy, engaging podcast content, or transformative courses, my goal is to be a guiding light on your path to mental well-being.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Embarking on the journey of building my therapy practice and engaging in mental wellness coaching has been a profoundly transformative experience, marked by moments that tested my resilience. One particular story stands out as a testament to my commitment to overcoming challenges and staying true to my mission.
Early in my career, I faced a period of professional setbacks and unforeseen personal challenges. Balancing the demands of establishing a therapy practice while navigating personal hurdles required a level of resilience that I hadn’t anticipated. There were moments when self-doubt crept in, and the path ahead seemed daunting. (It still does at times!)
During this time, I encountered a client who was grappling with issues deeply resonant with my own struggles. While I maintained the boundaries of confidentiality and professionalism, the shared human experience became a powerful point of connection. Guiding them through their journey, I found unexpected strength in providing support and learning alongside them.
The experience underscored the interconnectedness of our individual struggles and the power of empathy in fostering resilience. It also reinforced the importance of seeking support, both professionally and personally. Through perseverance and a commitment to continuous self-improvement, I not only weathered that challenging period but emerged with a newfound clarity and resilience.
This journey taught me that resilience is not just about bouncing back from adversity but also about growth, adaptability, and the capacity to find strength in vulnerability. It has become a guiding principle in my approach to mental wellness, shaping how I support others in their own paths toward resilience and self-discovery.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Dr. Carol Dweck’s groundbreaking book, “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success,” has been a transformative guide for many individuals seeking to unlock their full potential. Dweck introduces the concept of the “fixed mindset” versus the “growth mindset,” highlighting how our beliefs about our abilities can profoundly impact our success and happiness.
In the fixed mindset, individuals tend to believe that their abilities, intelligence, and talents are fixed traits, leading to a desire to appear smart at all costs. On the other hand, the growth mindset thrives on the belief that basic qualities can be cultivated through effort, learning, and perseverance. This mindset fosters resilience, a love for learning, and a willingness to embrace challenges.
One of the book’s strengths lies in its ability to resonate with people across various domains – from academics to sports, and beyond. Dr. Dweck’s research, presented in an accessible and engaging manner, prompts readers to reflect on their own mindset and encourages a shift towards a more growth-oriented perspective.
The book not only provides valuable insights into personal development but also offers practical advice on fostering a growth mindset in ourselves and others, be it in the classroom, workplace, or personal relationships. By illustrating real-world examples and success stories, Dweck inspires readers to reassess their approach to challenges and view failures as opportunities for learning and growth.
Personally, “Mindset” has been a guiding influence in my own journey, both professionally and personally. It has shaped the way I approach challenges, viewing them not as insurmountable obstacles but as stepping stones toward improvement. The emphasis on continuous learning and the belief that abilities can be developed over time aligns seamlessly with the philosophy I bring to my therapy practice and coaching.
In recommending “Mindset” to others, I believe it’s a must-read for anyone looking to cultivate a mindset that fosters resilience, adaptability, and a passion for lifelong learning. Dr. Carol Dweck’s insights have the power to not only redefine success but also to reshape the way we perceive and navigate our personal and professional lives, parenting, relationships, and beyond.
