We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Meeg-Wun DesJarlait. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Meeg-wun below.
Meeg-wun, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
It actually started with lashes. I originally wanted to become a lash extension technician, but right as I began researching training, Minnesota laws had just changed and you now had to be licensed instead of just certified.
That moment completely redirected my path. While researching how to become licensed, I discovered esthetics and it immediately clicked. I had always loved skincare, but I never realized it could be a career. Once I did, I knew I wanted to bring skincare into my communities in a way that felt welcoming, educational, and empowering.
I started building Skin Therapy in 2019 without fully knowing where the journey would lead. Launching a business right before and through a pandemic came with a lot of uncertainty, but it also forced me to grow quickly, stay adaptable, and truly understand what my clients needed.
Over the years the business has gone through many phases of growth and evolution. I have scaled, brought on team members, and learned how to refine the vision of the brand. Today I am back in a more intentional phase, focused on elevating the experience, expanding the brand, and building the next chapter of Skin Therapy.
And ST is only evolving. The way you experience skincare at home is about to get even better. There is so much more to come.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am an advanced practice esthetician and the founder of Skin Therapy, an Indigenous owned skincare and wellness brand based in Minnesota.
Skin Therapy was created to fill a gap I saw in the beauty and wellness industry. Many people, especially within multicultural and BIPOC communities, have not historically been centered in skincare education, representation, or access to inclusive treatments. I wanted to build a space where people feel seen, supported, and confident prioritizing their self care.
We specialize in corrective skincare treatments, customized facials, advanced services, and brow and lash treatments, all rooted in education and long term skin health. Our goal is not just to help clients look better, but to help them understand their skin and feel confident caring for it outside of the treatment room.
What sets Skin Therapy apart is the experience we create. We believe self care is a necessity, and we intentionally provide a luxury environment so our community can experience what true care and intentional rest feels like. Every service is personalized, educational, and designed to support lasting confidence.
What I am most proud of is the community that has grown around the brand and the trust clients place in us to care for them. Skin Therapy is about more than skincare. It is about helping people feel confident, cared for, and empowered in their everyday lives.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been building relationships and focusing on education rather than sales.
From the beginning, I wanted people to feel comfortable asking questions and learning about their skin. A lot of clients come to me after feeling overwhelmed by conflicting information online or after trying products and treatments that weren’t designed for their skin or skin concerns. By taking the time to listen, educate clients and create personalized treatment plans, trust naturally develops.
Word-of-mouth has been one of the biggest drivers of growth for Skin Therapy. When clients see results, feel genuinely cared for, and have a positive experience, they tell their friends, family, and coworkers. That kind of referral is incredibly powerful.
Social media has also played a major role. I focus on sharing educational content, real client results, and behind-the-scenes moments that help people connect with the brand and understand the value of professional skincare.
More than anything, consistency has been key. Showing up for my clients, delivering results, and staying true to the mission of creating an inclusive, welcoming space has allowed Skin Therapy to grow organically over the years.
I’ve never wanted to be the esthetician who simply performs a service. I want to be a trusted resource for my clients’ wellness journey.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
When I started back in 2019, I didn’t have a large amount of startup capital or outside funding. I built Skin Therapy with what I had and started much smaller than most people would probably imagine.
My back bar included a mix of some full-size but mostly travel-size products because that was what I could realistically afford at the time. I didn’t have the means to make a huge upfront investment in products, supplies, equipment, or decor, so I focused on purchasing only what I truly needed to get started.
I have always believed that you don’t need everything on day one. You just need enough to begin.
I also became very resourceful. A lot of the furniture and decor in my space came from Facebook Marketplace and secondhand finds. I love a good bargain, and I learned early on that building a business isn’t always about having the biggest budget. It’s about being intentional with the resources you have.
As the business grew, I reinvested back into Skin Therapy. Every new client, every service booked, and every milestone allowed me to continue upgrading products, equipment, education, and the overall client experience.
Looking back, I’m proud that Skin Therapy wasn’t built through a large investment. It was built through consistency, patience, reinvestment, grit, and a whole lot of hustle. Most importantly, it was built on a willingness to start before everything was perfect.
