Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Meech Justice. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Meech, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Back in 2016 I had the honor and privilege to work on this television show that was filming at the White House. During one of the performances there was a special memorial tribute for Prince performed by Aretha Franklin. During dress rehearsals, I just thought it would be really amazing to have the White House turn purple as Aretha Franklin sang Purple Rain in tribute to Prince, who had just passed away.
So with me being just about the lowest of the totem pole, I was a Script assistant at the time – I knew I needed help. I had asked my boss and she loved that idea, but didn’t think that it would get anywhere. I then ran into one of the lighting directors to see if if he had purple hue just cause he was doing lighting and I asked him if it was even possible to have the White House turn purple during Aretha’s performance and he said it was. So once I knew that it was possible I took a chance and I went to the Executive Producer of the show and mentioned to her my idea about turning the White House purple and she lived!
The next moments were history in the making. I watched the executive producers discuss my idea then call the chief of staff at the White House to get the president’s approval and within seconds she told me that the White House in fact would be turning purple.
Mind you this idea that I had was very last-minute, like it was during the last closed dress rehearsal; so Aretha Franklin is on stage along with Herbie Hancock and a few other jazz legends.
Well fast forward to Showtime – when Aretha Franklin comes out to sing Prince’s tribute of purple rain and she hits that first purple and the White House turns purple simultaneously, immediately Michelle Obama stood on her feet applauding, Barack Obama right next to her clapping his hands as the song was sang, and the White House was purple. It was the most gratifying feeling, I have ever had working on a show.
This project is one of the most meaningful moments in my career because it showed me that I had what it takes to make it as a Producer in Hollywood, more importantly, it taught me to trust my gut, to follow my instincts and to use my voice when it’s for the greater good.
Meech, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My career dates all the way back to my college years, where I learned the fundamentals of being a mass communicator. So my entire matriculation at Howard University and the entertainment business has been a reflection of just that.
I started off working the Howard homecoming committee, hosting campus events then doing internships based in PR and marketing i.e record labels, firms, agencies meanwhile doing production for TV and live events on the side. I had my own radio and tv show but also was running residence life. My hustle was crazy!
Because I’ve had so many different job titles and positions over the years. I think I’ve establish myself, my brand and my reputation to be understanding, kind, trustworthy and hard-working. That foundation of leadership, excellence, truth, and service has always been at the forefront of my choices, and I’m most proud to say that God has steered me every step of the way on this journey life.
So right now with my business Black Men in Media, we strive to encourage all men that are in the industry to be positive role models and to contribute to their communities so those impacted and the little changes made each and every day build bridges to significance. That’s why we connect, celebrate and highlight all men doing positive things for everyone to see.
Have you ever had to pivot?
To be quite frank, my entire career has been a huge pivot. Thankfully, I’m covered by the grace of God, who is the head of my life and He directs all of my footsteps on this journey called life.
Being a freelance or consultant worker, finding work is often the constant struggle so being able to pivot is quite essential. Just as adaptability, flexibility and patience – there are a few principles one must have in the industry.
I’m grateful to have learned early that success isn’t easily tracked and all careers are not linear. I’m blessed to have been at point a, b, c, f, l then back to g then k. So I take each moment with gratitude and grace knowing that greater is coming but what I’ve already accomplished is enough.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
To inspire, evoke emotion and alter minds through the art of self discovery with truth and vulnerability.
Each year, my voice becomes more vital to my personal and professional development. I love my ability to use my creative outlets to fully express myself by allowing my truth to be conveyed in a vast amount of ways.
I.e. adapting a book into a show or writing a song for another artist, the creative process is what makes it worth it when it’s shared and appreciated.
