We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mee Huh. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mee below.
Alright, Mee thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
In my previous jobs, I learned a lot of lessons, and they mostly came from people I worked with. The biggest lesson was a really simple thing, but one that has always been difficult for me as a very introverted person: the importance of making friends, and learning from them what you need to do.
It’s been an only a year since I started work as a professional so I think I have lot to learn and room to grow. When I did internships at first, I didn’t socialize enough, and found myself being passive towards my coworkers, which kept me from having strong connections with them. Looking back on that, I regretted how passive I was, and now I try to approach people with a modest and positive mindset, and I have much better results from work.
It’s my goal to be a professional stop motion animator, and to make it happen, I need to learn as much as possible, and put in a lot of effort. I always try to keep a positive attitude, to show people that I want to learn more, and they can usually tell how passionate I am. Once people understood how much I cared and how hard I’m working to learn, they always tried to help me a lot and at the end we became good friends, or sometimes I’d even gain a new mentor. These good friends gave me the opportunity to grow as an artist and to work in new places. So basically, I’d say the best thing I learned is to make friends, learn from them, and don’t be afraid but just do it. It sounds like advertisement slogan and kinda cheesy, but it was the definitely the most important lesson I learned at prior jobs.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a stop motion animator and artist based in Portland, Oregon and originally from Korea. I went to college in California where I developed my skills as a 2D artists (and I still love to draw people and places) but I fell in love with stop motion animation when I took a class in 2019 with David Braun. David is also a director at the studio Open The Portal, and from that connection I had the opportunity for an internship which was a great chance for me to grow and learn. Since I graduated from art school in 2021, I have been working professionally in several stop motion studios for about a year now.
My passion for making art is to give joy and positive energy to people, so I really enjoy bringing humor into any animations and drawings. Especially whenever I animate something, the first and the most important thing I consider as I develop an idea is how I can make audiences laugh. I love acting and being expressive through my animation and hope my feelings come through to the people who see my work! I also love the tangibility of stop motion: how REAL it feels and looks when things are hand-made.
I love working on personal projects like making seasonal animations: Halloween and Christmas so that I have the exact deadlines and that gives motivation to work on time.
Right now what I mainly do is make short stop motion animations, using either puppets or claymation. I also design backgrounds and make illustrations. Feel free to check out my website or instagram to see some examples of my work.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to create animation and art that everyone, no matter what age they are, can enjoy and that gives them joy when they need a laugh. As a personal goal, I want to become a skilled stop motion animator capable fo animating in many different mediums like TV, commercial, and features and maybe also be famous haha.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As an artist, showing my art to the public and seeing their reactions is really satisfying. Making art gives me confidence to express and be myself easily. That confidence has lead me to have the best people in my life and I’m so happy to be on this journey!
