We recently connected with Medina and have shared our conversation below.
Medina , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Ever since the birth of my first born, I always felt that my calling was in women’s health. The support I received made me want to also give to other women during pregnancy and birth. I was not sure how I was going there but this feeling took me on a journey of finding my way into Doula work. I started out doing prenatal and postpartum massage and transitioned into Doula and Midwifery work. After I lost my dream job, I took the first step into getting my certifications in doula work and also continued my studies in Midwifery care. I was so devastated that I lost my dream job but it opened doors to a real passion that I didn’t know was meant for me. Now, I am really living my dream of using my nurturing nature to help support women during a vulnerable time. It gives me so much fulfillment knowing that I made a big impact in someones life and it will last for a lifetime. It gives me so much fulfillment knowing that I was able to support a woman in reaching her birth goals.

Medina , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Wife, mother, midwife birth assistant, licensed massage therapist (Lic#R03337), certified birth and postpartum doula, and accomplished author, to name a few. My unrelenting devotion to women’s health and wellness is matched only by my fiery desire to make a difference in the world. I am a graduate of the “Holistic Massage Training Institute” and has more than 4 years of experience doing prenatal, fertility, infant, postpartum massage, and helping women heal from chronic neck and lower back pain. I attended Anne Arundel Community College and Western Governors University, I am currently taking midwifery classes at the National College of Midwifery. I have experience attending home births, hospital births, and student midwife apprenticing under a licensed midwife.
My journey began with the birth of my first child, which went off without a hitch and taught me the value of a strong community of caretakers. My second birth experience was not as supportive, and subsequently I knew I was destined to work in women’s health to ensure that women have access to support and care-taking. In 2022, The Shades of Blue Project honored me with the prestigious Good Heart Award during Black Maternal Health Week for my outstanding work in the birthing community. The Shades of Blue Project is dedicated to helping women of color before, during and after child-birth with community resources, mental health advocacy, treatment and support. My goal is to help my clients feel empowered and prepared during their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
My plans were to only offer doula services as a side hustle. But eventually when my clients saw that I was giving quality service, they spread the word about my business which resulted in more clients. I also made sure to keep up my profiles that promoted my business to my ideal clients. My focus was on giving quality service which I knew would bring in good reviews which I could use to convince my clients to sign on with me to help them with their birth goals. I put my heart in each client and I feel that what really helped me grow my side hustle into my full time business.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele is putting my business in front of my ideal clients. I used platforms that promoted my doula services to my ideal clients and I also collect reviews to share with prospective clients.
