We were lucky to catch up with Mecyia Elaine recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mecyia , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning the ins and outs of content creation required me to first get inspired. This step was essential to my growth because of course I had to see those before me who’s been in the game doing this right. I would spend time on YouTube to establish my favorites and analyze why I chose those creators. I’ve learned how to edit photos and I’m self taught in video software as well. I think I could have sped up the learning process by being organized in the state of receiving information. I also think it’s important that we take notes, separate what we learn, and place them in subcategories to move with more flow. The most essential skills learned would have to be knowing how to work a camera hunny! whether it’s a canon or your iPhone. Getting comfortable trying different angles while recording, seeing yourself speaking, and capturing the moment of anything you wish to make content. These are the basic essentials needed to ease you way into the content world. A few of the main obstacles I faced was juggling my actual life outside of the digital world because there’s no way you can avoid your actual 3D experience here. So because life never stops happening I struggled with showing up for myself in reality so a by-product of that was also struggling to show up digitally. Certain struggles of living in a certain neighborhood or being surrounded by hostile behaviors was not the content I wished to publish so I made it my business to find the times that were just right to do what I love.
Mecyia , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
So My name is Mecyia McIntyre but I like to go by Mecyia Elaine in honor of my late grandmother. I am a current freelance Model and Digital Creator. I have a platform on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. I currently find myself grinding especially with my YouTube platform because that’s my dream right there. I honestly prefer longer form content because building a community is what’s important to me. I love to get a conversation going and I want to establish a safe space for mothers in digital creation, women in beauty/fashion, and overall peaked self care awareness! Welcome my community ran by the “Memez” you see the “Memez” is like my Rihanna Navy. I love to talk to them, hear their experiences and grievances. I specialize in creating In the Beauty, Lifestyle, Motherhood, categories. You will definitely catch a review on the latest moisturizer, self care product, or my daily life as a toddler mom. I do have a skincare brand that’s relaunching soon and have sold things such as body scrubs, face masks, traditional skin care. Brand building is my primary focus right now while showcasing what it’s like being Meme. What sets me apart as a brand is the ability to indulge in everything that it means to be a woman and celebrating womanhood. My brand promotes you taking time for yourself and prioritizing your inner, as well as your outter beauty. I like to be a problem solver when it comes to daily care of the skin, hair, and bodies. I want to be the bridge between relation and information for my Memez. I’m proud of those viral moments I was able to create even though it came with much negativity from the beauty realm. However my community stood ten toes down for me and my struggles because everything on the outside is subjected to disapproval especially from those who haven’t found themselves and are projecting. Whether you don’t have the best smile, nose, or just simply don’t feel pretty. I want my community to help you learn to embrace or offer resources to help what ever decision you feel is best for your person. I’m proud of my brand and it’s journey to hold form in a world full of facts, opinions, and scrutiny.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A hugge lesson I had to unlearn was simply envy. I cannot stress how this right here is not good for the soul lol. Over-Comparing your journey to others whether it be with creators, models, or people in general is so destructive to your character in my opinion. I think that we oftentimes pick up our phone and I know at least 70-80% of people do this where we look at glimpses of someone’s life and equate that back to ours. I’ve seen people reshape how they look at relationship dynamics, how they see money, lifestyle changes etc based off social media. The backstory of me unlearning to not want to look like someone else or have their exact life started a few months after I started my YouTube channel. This was before I’d say social media hit the peak of having all these blogs and certain algorithms in beast mode. So about five years ago after I started my channel I would always and still do watch what we call the “OG beauty creators”who are monetized, have the plaques, the brands, the success right. While I think it’s healthy to envision yourself at that finish line I think we can’t just physically jump there. I wanted the same views that they had I wanted all the comments I wanted pure engagement. I would even watch my numbers and realized that I was driving myself insane over analyzing. You know “Get paid for simply filming your life and talking about beauty /fashion.” When in reality most of our greatest success stories didn’t skip steps. I think you have to have a certain level of delusion when chasing your dreams, but the delusion should not cloud reality also.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
Now we’re getting to the meat and potatoes of digital evolution. I think that NFTs are special and have the ability to change lives and shift the ownership space. Because we are stepping into the realm of intellectual property and establishing digital assets. You know I have this thing that I say “most things must be done in moderation” and that “too much or less of anything can be destructive either way. I’m learning that if your able to give you’re NFT scarcity and work the blockchain. This could open up a door for you that you’ve probably thought was sealed off or locked. It’s a unique representation of of digital power however I urge anyone to do research conducive to their journey before starting anything.
