We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mecki Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mecki thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with Matched By Mecki by having a long time connection with love. I know we all deserve to experience true love for ourselves, and others – so I want to be someone to help others experience that true love. I have always been a go to friend when it comes to helping others solve their dating and relationship issues, so I figured I would broaden the range of who I help – instead of limiting my expertise to only those closest to me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a certified matchmaker, relationship coach, day of wedding coordinator, officiant, and overall lover of love. I did not want to limit myself to only one of the above, because I believe they all can go hand in hand. Anything love related, I enjoy – so why not offer as many services as I can that will bring both myself and my clients the feeling of love and happiness. I have more of a “homegirl” approach, which makes it comfortable for others to work with me, and also removes the feeling of me having to deal with imposter syndrome. Although I have a more relaxed energy, I will still make sure my client has a pleasant experience, and I do everything I can to get amazing results.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn, is one I unintentionally taught myself. The lesson was that I couldn’t achieve greatness. I’ve never really lacked external confidence, but internally was slightly different. I had to realize I actually can achieve any goals with prayer, faith, and hard work. I used to think only people who have already “made it” can be the winners, so I wouldn’t try as hard. It is important not to put limits on ourselves, and always push for our own great results and achievements.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I have built my social media audience by posting when it felt right, and by being myself so the followers can learn more about my personality. I used to want a million + followers, but later realized as long as I am helping even one person – I am ok with that. Sure a million followers may look good to others, but if most of those people are following just to follow, I couldn’t care less. I am aware that having a big following on social media can help a business, and I do appreciate the followers I have – no matter how big or small. I think appreciating your followers will help build your audience as well. What’s most important to me when it comes to building a social media following is to stay true to myself and not forcing a post that isn’t authentic to who I am.
