Have you ever had to pivot?
The pivotal moment for me came during the COVID-19 pandemic when the world went into lockdown. Like many, I found my existing business landscape dramatically disrupted. With so much uncertainty around consumer behavior, I realized I needed to adapt quickly to maintain not only my income but also my overall business viability.
During this time, I took a step back to evaluate my options and identify how I could create new income streams that were not only sustainable but also recession-proof. I drew upon my understanding of market needs and consumer preferences and specifically focused on the wellness sector, which saw a surge during the pandemic as people sought comfort and self-care products while staying at home.
This led me to launch “1st Class Candles,” a brand that emphasizes premium quality, sensory experiences, and self-care. I designed the candles with unique fragrances, offering relaxation and mindfulness benefits, which resonated strongly with consumers looking for ways to enhance their home environments.
Establishing 1st Class Candles not only allowed me to diversify my income during a challenging time, but it also reignited my passion for creating products that bring joy and tranquility into people’s lives. The pivot taught me valuable lessons about agility, creativity, and the importance of listening to market signals. I’m proud to say that the brand has not only thrived but has also evolved into a community-focused initiative that supports local artisans and sustainable practices.
This experience reinforced my belief in being adaptable in the face of adversity and highlighted the importance of continuously seeking opportunities for growth, no matter the circumstances.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building my audience on social media has been an exciting journey, one that I’ve approached with intention and authenticity. When I launched 1st Class Candles, I knew that establishing a robust social media presence was crucial for reaching my target audience and sharing my brand story.
I started by identifying the platforms where my ideal customers were most active—Instagram and Facebook quickly emerged as key channels for visually showcasing my products. To create an engaging presence, I focused on relatable content that resonated with my audience. I shared behind-the-scenes glimpses of the candle-making process, stories about the inspiration behind each scent, and tips on incorporating self-care into daily routines. Authentic storytelling helped humanize my brand and foster a genuine connection with my audience.
Moreover, I leveraged user-generated content by encouraging customers to share their own experiences with the candles and using a unique hashtag. This created a sense of community and allowed my customers to feel like part of the brand’s journey.
Engagement was also vital. I made it a priority to respond to comments and messages promptly, partake in conversations, and follow similar accounts to expand my network. Collaboration with other small businesses and influencers also played a significant role. By partnering for giveaways and co-hosting events, we not only reached new audiences but also strengthened community ties.
As for advice to those just starting out, I would suggest the following:
