We recently connected with Mecca Williams-Muhammad and have shared our conversation below.
Mecca , appreciate you joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Thank you for asking. I own a boutique entertainment company, named 5 Oceans Booking. Our services include: hosting special events, booking talent for entertainment events, and management & PR services. Most entertainment companies that are successful in the entertainment industry. They have been in business for over fifty years and are big conglomerates. I manage to diverge from this fact, by being a small business. I term my business as a boutique entertainment company, to differentiate my entertainment company from the others. Most entertainment companies service many clients, and have a big roster of talent. This makes it difficult to service clients with individuality. I take on only a certain amount of clients at a time, to guarantee to maximize their experience at my company.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Absolutely, my name is Mecca. I am a Los Angeles, CA native. I started my professional career as a singer, songwriter, and a ghostwriter. I toured, written songs, and sang background vocals for many famous and established rappers, singers, and celebrities. I landed a position at The Michael Jackson, thanks to my brother, Michael Amir,; who served as Mr. Michael Jackson’s “Chief of Staff” for his company. Later, I landed a position working with Mr. Sean Combs. I decided to take my wealth of knowledge that I have learned from working with these moguls, and start my own entertainment company. I started with hosting special events for celebrities. Then I began offering management and Pr services to my clients. As of recent, I have been hosting women entrepreneur summits, to help women network to build their brands and their businesses. I recently released my first book through my company.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is very crucial for any small business. Social media is a massive marketing tool. Social media is so necessary for my business. One of my services, is hosting special events for my clients. Social media is one of the tools that I use to let my supporters know of any upcoming events that I may have. It is also a great tool to interact with people and businesses, whom I may not have connected with outside of social media. Any new “roll-outs” that my company may have, I use social media to spread the word. Again, social media is a great tool to market to your supporters. My advice to new users starting out on social media is to stay consistent ! Those of us who have larger platforms and many followers, all had to start somewhere. For me personally, it took me years to grow my audience. Also, make great content. If you have great content, it is bound to go viral. The more viewers that see your content, the more eyes you will have on your business. You have to stay creative. Lastly, have a plan on who you want to target as your demographic audience. The more you have an idea of who you are actually marketing to, the more successful your business will be!

Have you ever had to pivot?
Yes, I had to pivot during the COVID-19 pandemic. As I learned (with the rest of the world), that the world was literally shutting down; I had to pivot my business strategy with regards to hosting events. Large crowds were not allowed. So, I had to be creative so that my small business would survive this pandemic. When the COVID-19 pandemic first began, I had many events scheduled. I had to cancel my events, because I wanted to adhere to everyone’s safety, and comply with the law. I started doing “virtual events” and “webinars”, which was a big pivot from my “in-person events”. It was hard to accept this new reality! However, I wanted to make sure that I was in full compliance with the law, and not hold “in-person” events. Which ultimately saved lives. So it was a pivot that was much needed, and I learned so much during this difficult and tragic time.
