We recently connected with Mecca Wagner-Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Mecca, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I always had an interest in why people saw the world and themselves differently. I grew up in a place and time that provided diverse and conflicting views. This motivated me in obtaining my Bachelor of Science degree with a dual major of Psychology and Kinesiology. However, life tested my convictions and I found myself married and being pressured into a corporate career track for monetary purposes. I was good at what I did because I can learn and do anything but I was not fulfilled. Having a child locked me into this path to ensure she had everything she needed and provided security financially. After divorcing and committing to getting my daughter through her undergraduate degree debt free, I took a huge risk by obtaining some additional certifications and left my six-figure stable job to start my practice as a therapist. As I see clients today who are locked into their paths and have regrets about decisions, I tell them it is never too late to change. It has been 4 years since I opened my practice and my reputation has built up significantly as well as the success financially. I look forward to the continued success.

Mecca, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Since opening my practice and starting my new career, I have learned so much about myself and clients. I provide a focused service package of healing that includes Hypnotherapy, Emotional Freedom Techniques, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Every client is unique with a story of their own and so each person’s healing journey is unique in regards to length of time, cadence for their visits, and techniques that work best for them. I see clients for a wide variety of complaints ranging from fears/phobias, to anxiety/depression, to desire to change negative patterns, to increasing self-esteem, and physical/medical challenges. The free 20-minute phone consultation I offer allows a quick conversation to ensure I am comfortable assisting the potential client with their needs and that I feel like the right therapist for them. I have always possessed a talent for taking the complex and making it simple as well as seeing solution as defined by a much broader picture. With my knowledge in how the body and mind works, independently and cooperatively, I also apply this to the guidance I provide when speaking with a client. As I continue educating myself on newer studies and information, I integrate adjustments accordingly. I also truly care about my clients and am most fulfilled when I see that moment when they turn their first corner in their healing journey.
Can you open up about how you managed the initial funding?
I knew my long term plan was not to stay at my Corporate job, so I made a plan of saving money to allow myself to get an office, bare minimum furniture and supplies, and have my website built by someone I knew. They say it takes about 5 years for a new business to become profitable and so I planned on this. I minimized as best I could in regards to expenses and saved as much as I could. I did not want to take out a business loan so I committed to making what I had work as well as not getting discouraged by how hard it is to get clients.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Patience. Everyone wants to be successful right away, but in the business of mental health, a reputation takes time. So I celebrate the small milestones as I track the steady climb in quarterly income, the positive Google reviews, the increase in new clients, and referrals from other professionals. I stay consistent and persistent in my marketing and once I try something that does not work, I try something else.
