We recently connected with Meagan Faison and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Meagan, thanks for joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
When I look back, I definitely wish I would have started my business sooner, but I don’t know how successful I would be if I had.
So many of the skills and experience that I have needed to get my business started and grow, I learned throughout the course of my career. I started my business in March of 2024, so it’s still fairly new. Before starting my business, I worked in news and PR for ten years. During that time I learned many of the foundations of my business, from social media management, to interviews, to production. Even mentally, I feel like who I am now is more mature and better suited for being a business owner. So while yes, it would have been great to start sooner, I think that everything happens at the right time.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m and LA-transplant from North Carolina, and California has been my home for the past seven years. I love writing, and I have worked in news and entertainment for most of my career. After more than ten years of working for companies like CBS, ABC, IHeartMedia and the NBA, I finally ventured out to start my own business this year and in March I launched The Black Bouquet LA. It’s a media platform with the mission to give Black LA it’s flowers by showcasing all of the beauty of Black culture in Los Angeles. We create content to highlight Black businesses, events and experiences around the city. There is so much going on within Black LA, and we want to help people get connected!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that I’ve had to unlearn was that everything has to be planned out perfectly. I’ve been a bit of an overthinker and perfectionist for most of my life, but I’ve learned that it is important to also leave space for the unpredictability of life. While I’m always going to have some sort of plan of action in place in everything I do, it’s also important to be flexible and adaptable to any situation.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think that making genuine connections with people has been the most important part of growing my business and maintaining a good reputation. The Black Bouquet is based on community, so through my work I meet so many people every day whether through social media or in person. I’ve learned that people can sense insincerity, so it is important to best represent your brand by being a respectable and kind person. People pick up on that and respect it. There have been so many people who have spread the word about my business through word of mouth, and that’s given me amazing opportunities to grow, and I’m very grateful for that.
