We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Meagan Ewing a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Meagan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Massage Therapy has been my passion since I graduated high school. I enrolled two weeks after I graduated high school and our first day, we gave each other a full sixty-minute massage and I haven’t looked back since. That day, I knew I was onto something bigger than myself. I just couldn’t put my finger on it. I worked and am licensed in the salon world as a cosmetologist. I was a nail technician and massage therapist up until I learned a true passion of mine in 2019, which is Temporal Mandibular Joint Dysfunction work. I was so excited to bring what I had learned in North Carolina home to Maryland and start helping as many people as possible. Knowing that many people suffer from TMJD and have no idea where to turn. Then, just as fast as my excitement grew, we were hit with the pandemic that forced everything and one to stop in their tracks. Getting into the Massage Therapy world at eighteen I learned quickly that massage therapy is not a luxury, it is a necessity for a million different reasons. And being the person I am I love to educate to anyone who will listen on why that is an important message. Then, I realized that my purpose is to help those with TMJD and help those who have been struggling for years a different look on getting treatment instead of constantly getting injections and look at it from a muscular standpoint. And in the future bridge the gap between massage therapist and the dental/ orthodontist community to work together on this approach. Chiropractic services are amazing, and people are often seen two to three times a week, but if you think about it. Chiropractors adjust the framework, we as massage therapist work on the muscles that are attached by tendons. Every time your bones are manipulated, your muscles if not worked or used to having work done are going to pull you immediately back out of alignment within a day or so because it has become comfortable with overcompensating for the out of alignment your bones are in. This mission is so important because my industry is so complex, and we need to start respecting this profession for how deeply massage therapists not only love what we do but take pride in learning best how to benefit the person on our table.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I entered this industry hungry to learn about the human body. At the time, I had already had three years in the salon world, worked with a few massage therapists and really enjoyed what they either taught me or made me feel when I was on their table. The discipline I have, started there and learning how to help others with therapeutic touch. I have always worked hard; I’ve come from a family of work horses and won’t stop until my vision comes to life. After my first child was born, I realized I had given fifteen years of my young life to the salon and spa world and wanted to try my hand at putting all that I had learned over the years to the test. With that I opened Namaste My Day starting as a mobile wedding massage therapist giving couples massages the day of or around their wedding day. And since then, my business has grown branches in a few directions which is really amazing to reflect on. I even make clients that are expecting a custom baby blanket! Setting me apart from others isn’t something that I capitalize on, its more about how I work with my industry to constantly strive to get the positive messages out there and that is simply by education. I have a few public speaking engagements under my belt now, which will allow me to do more in the near future. I am so proud of the work I am doing with TMJD as educating clients, providing treatment and listening to their feedback after our sessions are done. The reviews from these first-time clients that then constantly reschedule is rewarding in itself. You never know what you will get out of a massage session, but I will happily say this, when you inquire about my specialties, I want to educate you first and make sure I answer any and all questions before during or after. I take my time, I listen, and I even educate you to help you better understand all that is either going on or what to expect. No one just hops on and off of my table.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Honestly, it truly is consistency. Now, I have years of experience with clientele starting at the young age of fifteen as a shampoo girl and working my way up to a successful nail technician and massage therapist. Throughout the years, I have learned about consistency. If my work wasn’t a client’s favorite, I’d never see them again, they wouldn’t tip me or reschedule with me. The biggest part of that strategy was if that client was going to refer you to anyone that they know is looking. My clients know whether it is social media, emailing, texting or they are on my table, you are going to get the same personality no matter what. There is no point in being dishonest with your clientele they will sniff it out and next to consistency its trust. Anyone coming to your business is trusting you to the fullest and it is your job to secure that feeling.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
With being so in love with my industry, I almost didn’t get into this at all. Meaning, when becoming a Massage Therapist, you have to complete a big MBLEX test on it. Then take state. unfortunately, due to my test taking anxiety I failed that many times. Five to be exact, I had to pay two hundred and fifty dollars each time. After the third time it is a requirement that you have to go back to school for a hundred hour before takin it again. Failing and going back to school was such a let down because I just could not understand why I could not pass this. I’d take a break for a while and move on from there it was all very mental. I go to take it a fifth time and it was then that I passed it. After each time and me wondering ” how can I keep envisioning me doing this and keep falling short of completion?” I never gave up, because I knew I wanted, needed to be an M.T. so I’d mentally prepare myself every time. I was always told ” I have no idea how you do this.” and that they would’ve given up, but I just couldn’t do that. I knew working on clients was a big part of my journey that I was not, not going to fulfill. And I work with that mindset every single time I have a client on my table.
