We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mckynzie Anderson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mckynzie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I’ve always been into art, and making new things since i was little. Through the middle and high school years I really picked up on drawing, painting and sculpting. I did that all the way through my early twenties, and then a good friend of mine, said I should really start show casing and selling my artwork. I wasn’t really sure if I had the skills to put myself out there like that, but I took a leap of faith and did it. After awhile doing that, I came across the cricut and tumblr making. I loved the idea of not every one of my cups would be the same, even if they had the same design, each one I was feeling and placing in different ways.
Mckynzie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a young first time mom to be to a little girl coming in September. I am 26 years old and I love adventures in the outdoors! Most of the time I am outside planning my next project or working on them outside. I have a wonderful husband we will be celebrating our year of marriage this month! I am a very easy going out going person you will ever meet!
I’ve been very creative since I was little. When I got to my early twenties I decided to make my love of art and crafts into a business! I hand make everything from confettii for birthday parties, 3d cups, tumblrs & big handpainted wood pieces!
No cup is ever the same, its the beauty of vinyl and clay work of cups. They may look similar, but they are never the same! They take hours to make, and they are made with love, and gentleness!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social Media is a big part of business now a days. You have to stay active on it. I haven’t been for a few months, due to being pregnant and I see it taking an effect on my performance and sales.
I manly stick to facebook and instagram. Using tags on instagram is a big part. Ive started making reels for not only instagram but tik tok as well. Theres not a good way of teaching how to do them, just start playing around with the videos. Alot of people like in progress videos, step by step, and like before and after ones.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Getting your business started is the hardest and most stressful part of it. I never had a set aside funding for my business, I really played it by ear, saw a good deal on product that I needed I would buy it and resale to make my money back.
If I could start over with funding my business, I would have planned out my money better. Got a later start on my business to better my business in the long run
