We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful McKinnell Ferguson . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with McKinnell below.
McKinnell, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I feel like photography came into my life at such a perfect time. Do I wish I would’ve known I was going to love something so much-yes! I am a true believer in “things happen for a reason”. Photography has allowed me to meet new people, find myself, provide for my family, and serve my purpose. If I would’ve started sooner or later, I couldn’t imagine what my life would be now. I’m thankful for the opportunity I’ve been given to capture memories that people will pass down through generations.
McKinnell, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I come from a very artistic family, and have been surrounded by creatives since a very young age. I have always been an artist, which made the jump into photography a little less scary. Sure there is always plenty to learn, but I was immediately comfortable during sessions letting my creativity guide the way.
I started off taking pictures of my two young children and also my sisters. I slowly began to build a portfolio and continue to try new ideas and meet new people. I offer a wide variety of sessions, and haven’t really chosen a specialty because I love it all!
I am most proud of my dedication and commitment to my work. I put so much thought, time, and energy into making my clients feel comfortable, beautiful, and satisfied. I am very flexible and super laid back. My work is full of emotion and beauty. My biggest goal is for people to see past their flaws and recognize that everything in its own way, is beautiful.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
When I first began playing around with my camera, I was working part time as a pharmacy technician. Hours were cut there, so I needed something to supplement my main job. I never expected my photography to grow as fast as it did and it quickly became my main focus. I still work as a pharmacy technician, but am preparing to make the leap into photography full time!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I think the first step is to be proud of your work/product. If you lack the confidence or are afraid to put your product out there, people won’t see it!
From the beginning, I always used social media to share every picture I took. I engaged with other people outside of sessions more, offered giveaways for support, and continued to educate myself to improve my service everyday.
