We were lucky to catch up with McKenna Hiller recently and have shared our conversation below.
McKenna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear from you about what you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry and why it matters.
While systems and efficiencies certainly exist for convenience purposes, the creative industry can often overlook the HUMAN behind the end result. It is as though we have gotten so lost in consumerism and image that we have lost the soul. I do not want to be a cog in a system, but instead a teammate in building something meaningful. Life moves fast, especially in New York City. And while it’s important to continue moving and adapting, it’s just as valuable to move with purpose and intention. If you move fast for the sake of moving fast, you might find yourself 1000 miles down the road in the wrong direction with a crowd of people who don’t acknowledge your humanness. I think we need to slow down and begin celebrating the people behind the art, the ones who gave their souls to inspire the world. In my opinion, kindness, encouragement, intention, and teamwork are the only way to create meaningful and sustained impact. Let’s begin celebrating the people!

McKenna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I consider myself a multi-faceted creative who wears many hats. From the time I was born, I have adored fashion with excited eyes and covered canvases with acrylic paint. I studied Marketing and Creative Writing so I could leverage my artistry to have greater impact. Now, as a Creative Director and Professional Model, I have refined my craft in the most fulfilling way. I treat every single day as a blank slate, from the clothing I wear, to the food I eat, and the questions I ask strangers- no day or project is the same. Aside from spending a lifetime observing trends, art, beauty and fashion, I have always found my greatest inspiration in people. This is what grants me the greatest advantage in what I do. I make sure to slow down and spend time getting to know the people I meet; I want to know what inspires them, motivates them, and causes them their greatest struggles. Through this, I not only find answers within myself, but also know how to combine my creative knowledge to tell their story in an impactful way. As a result, I create moving campaigns that resonate with my clients and their customers, and open the doors for many more opportunities to come.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Put simply, connecting with people through art. Inspiring, shifting a perspective, encouraging someone to take action or feel seen.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being kind, open, inquisitive, and never afraid to share a compliment or insight. When I think something positive for someone or envision something that would align with their style or mission, I tell them. Not only does it show people what I value and appreciate about them, but it also shows my ability to understand how to position them through an artistic lens. Whether it’s valuing someones resilience or envisioning a specific creative campaign, I let people know what I see in them and for them.
