We caught up with the brilliant and insightful McKenna Ashcroft a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi McKenna, thanks for joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I absolutely love being a business owner. It comes with it’s struggles but also comes with so many good things. I am so thankful for my business because I now have an 8-month-old daughter and because I run my own business I am able to work on my own time. I stay home with her during the week and work during nap time on my laptop and schedule sessions on the weekends when my husband is off work and able to be with her. This has been the biggest blessing for me and for our family.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is McKenna. I am a Fine Art Wedding photographer specializing in Colorado Mountain weddings. I grew up in Portland Oregon and lived there until I moved to Utah at the age of 24. I went to school for Dental Hygiene but dropped out after my photography business took off for me. I am so thankful that 18-year-old me saved all of my extra money and bought a camera. After moving to Utah I began working for a small boutique children’s clothing company based out of San Diego. I shot their catalogs every 3-5 months and every business trip felt like a vacation. I loved it so much. On one of the business trips to San Diego I met my now husband on Mission Beach and we instantly hit it off. After we got married we moved to Denver Colorado and this is when my small business really took off. I began to shoot more weddings and really fell in love with love stories.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building an audience on social media is a full-time job… haha but if I were to give advice I would say consistency is key. And TikTok is really blowing up so jump over there while you can still grow like crazy! (@mckennahashcroft)

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
For photography, Instagram and TikTok have been the best source of new clients. Plus it is free marketing!
