We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful McCall Bliss. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with McCall below.
McCall, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
We’ve always been pretty self-taught when it came to music. I find that we learn the most from our friends and from always trying to be in the same room as talented and creative people. Sometimes I wish we’d been able to go to school for music or spent more time on it in the early days, but I feel like finding the type of music that you want to make is a personal journey and you’ll reach it on your own when the time is right.

McCall, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey! We’re McCall and Mike, and we’re a band called davvn. We make alt-pop music with pop punk and electronic influences. We both met in our last year of college in Boston and started dating, and started a band after a few years after stumbling upon some awesome demos McCall had been working on in her bedroom. We recently moved to Nashville this past year to start working with some amazing songwriters and producers, and also to be a part of the scene here and immerse ourselves in an artistic community. We’re not the most common alt-pop artists – being a duo is unique on its own, but we’re also a little bit older than the artists in our genre as well. Mike and I grew up with the early pop punk music of the late 2000s and 2010s, so it’s truly nostalgic music for us that we love to incorporate into what we make. I think that the concepts we write about are pretty unique as well – since we’re in a long term relationship and our life experiences are different from others.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I think one thing I wish I’d taken more serious sooner is making sure to immerse yourself in a music focused city. Previously living in Boston, it was difficult to find people to collaborate with on songwriting as well as producing and booking shows. Moving to Nashville we’ve met a ton of motivated and talented creative people to work with. This also helps motivate us to elevate our game to keep up. It’s a great situation to be in and I wish we’d have made the move sooner.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
We’ve been working on our brand and on our social media presence for years now, but some of the biggest success we’ve seen recently has been from our last two singles, especially on TikTok. We’ve made an effort to show off some of our personality and to highlight the best parts of our tracks in teaser videos on the app. The best advice I would give to new artists is not to overthink your content – keep it short & sweet and don’t try to make something too high quality. I’ve seen memes and simple content succeed more than highly produced content over and over. What really seems to matter is having something eye-catching and showing off your personality in a genuine way.
