We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mazy Roland. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mazy below.
Mazy, appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
If I chose to start over I don’t think there would be much to change. I would encourage myself to try and stand out more. Theres so many amazing artists in the photographer community, especially living in Atlanta. You always have to take that chance and next opportunity to grow. A big part of how I got where I am today is networking. Getting to know people and sharing my work as much as possible.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Mazy. I’m a photographer/videographer in the metro Atlanta area, but soon I will be relocating to the South Alabama area. I am excited to expand but also saddened to be leaving my ATL clientele and family. I take a lot of time after my shoots to sit down and edit each picture individually and I think thats what sets me apart from others, The eye of I have for editing. I was extremely blessed to work with the Heritage High school football program during their 22-23 season and I am forever grateful for that opportunity Head coach Ryan Andrews gave me. That organization has helped me gain clients and connections that I couldn’t have imagined a year prior.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Like I said before. I love to edit. One thing I can promise to my clients is that when I edit their set of pictures, it won’t be the same as any other. I take pride in knowing my editing bag is so versatile.
I also love outdoor photography. Going along with editing, I prefer to use natural lighting in my pictures. I love to find places around my area that would make for perfect backgrounds.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
As a full time student athlete it was hard to find a job that I could work around my schedule & still make good money. When I got injured my last year playing basketball I picked up the camera for fun to shoot my friends since we didn’t really have a “team photographer”. Those connections led to some more people messaging me for info on how to get pics. It wasn’t until a coach of mine told me I should be charging for pictures that I even thought about starting a business. As my first year went on I started realizing that creating content is something I truly have a passion for. Starting out with a little rebel t7, to now leveling up with 90D’s and Mark5’s. I always say I’m blessed for the way things worked out because I never guessed this is where I would end up.
