Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maz Louise. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Maz thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents were quite supportive of every expressive avenue I wanted to explore growing up. I feel lucky for that aspect of their parenting when looking back. Piano, guitar, horseback riding, roller skating, pogo sticking, motorcycle riding, any creative pursuit I could think up as a young person- they found a way to help make happen.

Maz, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Maz, I’m a queer woman from Iowa, I write songs that explore themes of grief and loss, heartbreak, pain, trauma, etc. What it means to try and heal and grow and exist through those things. The work I do with music feels more like a therapy for me than it does a brand or a business. Though I would love to have the opportunity to make a career of it one day. Maybe scoring film or opening my own venue? Who knows!

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I don’t believe our current system uplifts artists or creatives much at all, we are in constant survival mode, exhausted, burnt out, trying to make ends meet. Creating and searching for inspiration while living in a scarcity mindset can fuel the work in some ways but also makes it too difficult to execute and share. I think we’ve gotta burn it down and start again!

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Just screaming into the void mostly. Reminding myself I’m still alive!
