We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mayra Mobilia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mayra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
12 years ago I began design¡ng and making bikinis for myself. I was not thinking about creating a business at the time. After getting many complements from family and friends, I decided to design and create bikinis to sell. My surprise was the satisfaction of my clients. Thank God I was enjoying it and demanding more of myself everyday with the theme of sewing quality finishes. I took a course and received a certificate from The Fashion Institute of Florida. I also received a certificate from the Minauri Institute of Spain.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I design and sew bikinis for all body types. I innovated the classic swimsuit by mixing sporty and sexy, making you feel comfortable, unique and radical. I make everything by hand in my sewing workshop at home. I do all of the work myself. I am able to design and make custom bikinis for all sizes. This sets me apart from some of the other swimsuit designers. My designs have been shown on runways during Miami Swim Week for more than three years. The shows are a lot of fun and I really enjoy working with the models.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are many tutorials and videos on the internet that show patterns, techniques, and tricks that make learning how to sew easier and faster. I am still finding and watching new videos and taking online courses to continue to learn and grow. I was not aware of these resources when I first started out. There are also many fabric stores on the internet that will make custom fabric for you.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Before I moved to the United States I had suppliers, business connections, models, photographers, radio and television interviews and customers. When I moved to this country, I had to start from scratch. I started with local Miami bazaars and created content on Instagram showing my variety of swimsuits with colorful prints. Eventually I met and am still working with a modeling agency. I have participated in more than 5 fashion runways during Miami Swim Week. I am grateful for having met fantastic people in my journey.
