We were lucky to catch up with Mayra Gomez-Sanchez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mayra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
When the majority of Corporate America sees the word, “copywriter,” many of the times the phrase, “business owner” doesn’t come to mind.
I say this because of the countless stories, including my own, where my copywriting community has been nickel and dimed for their work – or, haven’t been paid by the agreed upon deadline.
I believe it comes from Corporate America’s view that a copywriter “just writes words” when it’s so much more than that.
Copywriters not only need to have an in-depth understanding of evidence-based copywriting techniques, but we also need to comprehend the psychographics of our clients’ target audience.
Between hour long onboarding calls with a set questionnaire to hone in on the businesses’s brand tone and voice and our own market research, there’s so much time spent on making sure we provide quality and genuine copy for our clients.
Business owners are paying for a skill.
A skill that attracts their target audience to their offer.
That skill is something that should be respected – in other words, investing in the price the copywriter sets and paying on time as it’s the copywriter’s livelihood.
Mayra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi everyone, I’m Mayra – a launch and sales conversion copywriter for socially conscious, online business owners.
Before I was a copywriter, I was an elementary teacher.
I taught for 8 years – the majority of those years teaching 1st grade.
Towards the end of that chapter, I started to feel burnt out with the system and found my mental health deteriorating.
Seeking to help myself, I started searching for jobs online – specifically jobs that teachers took after moving away from the profession.
The word “copywriter” came up and I was intrigued as I have always loved to write.
As I searched for more information on the topic, I quickly realized that (at the time) copywriting was all about pressure tactics to make people buy something.
That was a red flag for me and I immediately exited out of my online search.
“That wasn’t for me,” I thought.
I wasn’t, and will never be, someone to make another person feel bad about themselves.
But knowing the algorithm, I started getting ads on copywriting courses through Instagram.
One particular course caught my eye because it used the phrase, “ethical marketing.”
Curious, I signed up for the masterclass and was blown away by how marketing could actually be used for good.
Thanks to Sarah Turner of Write Your Way to Freedom, I learned all about copy and the importance of using my skills to better the world.
In other words, I chose to partner with change making brands that brought some form of wellbeing or happiness into the lives of others.
Where the audience of these brands felt empowered and excited to be part of the brands’ community.
And that was the beginning to my new chapter!
For two years now, I’ve been writing welcome, nurture, sales, and launch email sequences for product and service based businesses.
I also write the sales page that goes along with these the launch email sequences.
The way I write brings out the face behind the brand – a form of humanity that people can genuinely relate to.
It’s the lack of stuffy language that attracts the audience of my clients and what brings in revenue.
I’m proud that my copy is connecting people to something that brings them joy, and to a point, transforming their lives – no matter how small.
Cultural Visionaries stems from:
🏠 Familia: Mis papas, tíos, abuelos, etc. are the foundation of my being. They sacrificed -and continue – in order to live the American Dream as immigrants.
🎓 Educación: Going to college allowed me to meet other first gens finding their path to success. None of us knew what we were doing, but we searched for resources to help us stay in school.
🤝 Networking: The domino effect of meeting other first gens helped me meet people they knew – and vice versa. Next thing I realized, I was finding myself surrounded by change makers…and that list continues to grow.
🫶🏽 Love For My Cultura: I’m 💯Méxicana but I wasn’t embracing it until my mid 20’s and even more in my 30’s. I think I tried so hard to assimilate by not speaking Español or letting my curls out, etc, that I lost myself. Reconnecting with my roots helped me see just how many other people in community are doing the same.
The pattern with these experiences all led to one word…
✊🏽 VISIONARIES ✊🏽
All of these experiences have connected me to business owners with ideas of what the future could and will be like.
They are strong.
They have passion.
They are you.
They are me.
They are us.
I’m proud to be writing for the comunidad of change makers.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Aside from posting content on LinkedIn and Instagram, I also have an email list where I send my audience weekly copy tips to improve their business visibility and connection to others.
It’s been a joy sending out these emails because I’ve received replies from my email community on how valuable and easy-to-digest the copy tips have been for them – especially being busy business owners.
If you’re wanting weekly copy tips too, you can be part of my email list by grabbing my free launch checklist. From there you’ll be on your way with all the copy goods!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A big lesson I had to unlearn was seeing someone with a lot of money as “bad.”
For some reason it was engrained in me that if you were wealthy, you were selfish.
I don’t know why I thought like that, but it kept me small for so long.
It wasn’t until I invested in my copywriting course to become a copywriter/business owner, that I saw money as a way to help myself and others.
I now see money as a form of support.
It can make life just a little bit easier.
And most importantly, it doesn’t make me a bad person because I have good intentions.
