Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maymunah Kelly. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Maymunah, appreciate you joining us today. One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
During the pandemic I wanted something to take my mind off my chemotherapy treatments, and wanted a Nintendo Switch, to play with my friends during the months everyone was inside. Unfortunately no matter where we looked it was either sold out or being snatched by scalpers. Two friends from college ( a couple) found a guy that worked at Best Buy who was annoyed with all the scalpers and resellers so he bought a bunch of them and gave them away for free, and he gave me one, mailed it off to a total stranger. And that’s probably the nicest thing a stranger has ever done to me.

Maymunah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I believe I got into the industry on chance, but also I don’t necessarily consider myself in the industry, I often feel like I know things and then I don’t know things.
My goal is always to be the best visual storyteller that I can be in whatever form that may take. I don’t like to boast or piece apart every problem and solution as you’ll never be prepared for mishaps, mistakes & monumental moments. You just have to be willing to find some patience & drive to push on.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Stop chasing status and positions, chase your dream. Even if it lacks in the bill paying department. As long as you’re enjoying what you’re doing and staying true to that vision of yourself— even if the vision may shift often.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Most of the time it’s word of mouth, the other percentage is going to be cranking around on social media, because it’ll get potential clients to your faster and more efficient. And because it’s such a big market for anything and everything you’ll always find someone willing to break bread with you.
