We recently connected with Mayila and have shared our conversation below.
Mayila, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
I remember the first time some random person sent me an email asking how much I would charge for a feature. This was very early on in my career, before I had any credits or accolades. I was so excited to be deemed a professional by someone I didn’t even know. It was the coolest thing. I vividly recall trying to come up with a number but having no idea what an artist would charge for this kind of thing. It was my first time ever getting paid doing what I love and now, years later, it’s a part of my every day life. I’m so blessed and so grateful.

Mayila, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Now, a Grammy-nominated songwriter and artist, I’ve been marking my territory in the entertainment industry for quite some time now. Originally from Columbus Ohio, I began my journey training in dance and doing musical theater. However, I eventually found my voice in writing my own songs.
My voice and pen have landed writing credits with Chris Brown, H.E.R., Babyface, Ty Dolla Sign and many others. My music has been featured on iHeart Radio, Spotify’s Fresh Finds, and as the theme song for Tyler Perry’s TV Show “Sistas” as well. Beyond writing songs, I’ve also done quite a bit of theater and have been making my way to TV.
I have been blessed to do what I love throughout my life and will continue to reach for the stars.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is waking up every day and getting to create a world that yourself and many others can enjoy. I create music, dance, and many other forms of art as a catharsis for myself and as a result, it becomes something for all of us to share. I think being able to create something that changes someone for the better and positively affects someone is the most rewarding of all.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
What drives my creativity is telling stories that are true to myself and in turn relatable to others. I write songs from my own experience, from other’s experiences, from all over, but always from truth. My upcoming single entitled “Matinee”, releasing October 21st, is a very true telling of my own story. I intend to create a sonic world and palette that is not only enjoyable, but feels good to the soul.
