We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maya Thomas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maya below.
Alright, Maya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
The legacy I am building is the love of creative expression and art. I want all communities to feel included in spaces; finally, they usually would have no opportunities to flourish. I want to connect people to all forms of art and be able to influence the next generation to continue those same strides to break barriers and be themselves.
Maya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Maya Thomas, and I am an artist. I work with many mediums, such as; painting, special effects makeup, and creative directing. I make meaningful art that connects with my generation and beyond. My Art raises awareness of love, death, abuse, beauty, and pain of life. My artist name is ArtXMessiah. I hold my Art dear to me, and what I find most satisfying is when people connect to that and my representation of life.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is my satisfaction when people understand the message you are trying to convey in your art. The world can seem so small, and we often feel alone at times, but when I make art, I am shining a reflection to the masses, showing them that they are not alone and that more people than you know connect with you.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
The only thing non-creatives will struggle to understand about my journey as a creative is simply the ability to lose control and be vulnerable. As a creative, I make art to describe my journey as a black woman in today’s world. I have to be open and articulate how I feel, which includes a lot of self-reflection and the ability to let go of control and let the protection of my emotions be well enough to express them.
