Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maya Sultana. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Maya, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
How did you learn to do what you do?
In May of 2014, I committed myself to becoming a tattoo apprentice in Dallas, TX under an amazing mentor. I still can recall the rush of excitement when I picked up a tattoo machine for the first time.
Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process?
Believe in yourself and have faith in your capabilities! When you believe in yourself, you can overcome self-doubt, and have the confidence to take action to get things done. Use time wisely to create a solid foundation for yourself and your future self. Most of all, enjoy your life to it’s fullest and embrace your experiences with an open mind.
What skills do you think were most essential?
Becoming a full-time artist of any media requires constant risk taking when making art work.
I feel one can be more successful in learning a new skill or technique with a consistent and healthy balance of dedication, motivation, and patience. Learning is a huge part of life and we should always strive to grow and develop our skills. It’s very important to take the time to explore and understand your choice of medium and elements. Don’t be afraid to challenge and modify your techniques to develop your personal style.
What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
At times my anxiety really tested the best and worst of me during my developmental stages in tattooing. There were moments I felt a huge lack in my confidence and my ability to learn the trade. Sometimes psychological obstacles can hinder our willingness to try different things which can cause one to miss an opportunity. You have to believe in yourself! Thankfully, I have an amazing support system that pushed me hard me to get where I am today.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
One day I was scrolling through Instagram, and saw a post for an apprenticeship. Taking the risk to leave a corporate 9-5 to now having a private studio with my own hours has truly been a dream come true. After nine years in the craft, most of my clients have become very good friends. We love getting together in my cozy little studio and catch up. I’m the most proud of my clients and followers for continuing to give me a chance to prove myself through my work.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is getting to see their face light up with a huge smile after seeing the final product.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to spread positivity and encouragement to any artist willing to experiment and learn!
