We were lucky to catch up with Maya Rosalia recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maya , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
A few years ago I wrote a song centered around the theme of investing deeply in others, yet receiving little in return. Upon the songs creation, it quickly became my personal favorite out of the other songs I had written. Seeking to distinguish it from my typical pop songs, I collaborated with a composer to infuse orchestration, which added a cinematic quality reminiscent of musical influences, such as Lana Del Rey and Disney film soundtracks.
Maya , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I find immense fulfillment, in serving as a role model for younger audiences, while also aiming to evoke a nostalgic sentiment, among listeners of my generation. I draw a lot of inspiration from musical theater and I actively encourage covers and remixes of my songs for my listeners who also sing. At the core of my music lies the belief that, though my melodies may evoke, bittersweetness (both pleasure and pain) they are woven with depth and sophistication. Romanticism is a big part of my musical expression, reflecting a deep love for the vintage glamour and old Hollywood and its legacy. This aesthetic not only manifests in my music but also mirrors who I am as a person. I aspire for my creations to be timeless and I believe that sets me apart from a lot of artists right now who are only trying to follow trends.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The song I’ve been discussing in this interview called “You Never Cared” underwent a meticulous, two-year development process. Given my standards, I wanted to ensure that the song had an impeccable quality making the journey, one of trial and error. This endeavor demanded assertiveness and unwavering belief in the songs potential. As an independent artist, I navigated this journey solo, which at times felt daunting as I was solely responsible for maintaining faith in its success. I did receive invaluable support along the way during the creative process, however the business aspects required persistent determination and self belief.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the most significant recent pivots in my career was the decision to depart from my music conservatory. Initially, I found solace and support but soon I encountered a series of betrayals and professional setbacks that took a toll on my mental well-being. The toxic environment stifled my creative growth, and hindered the flourishing of my career, forcing me to decline promising opportunities. However, the decision to leave proved pivotal opening doors to newfound opportunities and allowing me to reclaim control over my artistic journey. Through this experience, I’ve gained valuable insights into the intricacies of the music industry, expanding my skill set beyond that of a singer- songwriter to include production, publishing, and recording.
