Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maya Rosalia . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Maya , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I am currently working on my next single, which is a original song which I’ve worked on with a composer. This song is very cinematic and has a lot of orchestral elements. When I played it for others, they said it reminds them of a Disney movie or film score. I am super excited for this song to be out because of the message of this song, which is about being pushed aside and not being put as a priority. As well the sound itself is unique and I think it is a timeless sound that all ages can enjoy.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a singer songwriter, who started writing songs when I was around seven or eight years old. I was enrolled in classical piano, and I started improving my own songs on the piano. A few years later, I started a girl group with a few of my friends and we would write our own original songs together and perform them. I was very ambitious and determined always knowing exactly what I wanted to do. I would say something that is unique about my music is that it is all kid friendly. I grew up babysitting and I even worked at a princess at a children’s place so I would say my audience starts with very young children. I want to be a good role model for them and I want the messages of my music to be empowering not just relatable. I love incorporating all different types of music and into my music. I grew up with classical music as well as opera and musical theater so I have been trying to incorporate that more into my recent projects. I also grew up listening to 90s R&B some soul so that’s something that I also would love to incorporate in the future. I think every genre of music should be represented and even though a lot of my past projects have been pop, I also want to make sure that I include my other influences and inspirations in the music I’m creating.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Growing up as a musical artist, I definitely dealt with others looking down upon creative jobs for people in the music industry. It can be really discouraging, and I think us as a society needs to support others who are trailblazers and who are going after their goals and dreams. The most successful people I’ve met in the music industry have inspired me and kept me motivated because they know they were once to where I was. Everyone has a beginning and everyone starts from nothing so it’s really important to understand that and respect the individuals who are going after their dreams which is a daunting thing to do, especially when others don’t support it.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I was always taught when I was young about music is that it has to be trendy or “on brand”. Now my goal is to make music that is timeless and that all ages can enjoy for years to come. I’ve been told a lot of different things being a musical artist, and especially being as young as I am. I was told I have to act a certain way or sound a certain way because that is what is “in” right now. Sometimes when I listen back to my past songs,I notice the mystic was trendy at the time but now I either can’t relate to it or it’s not a sound that I would listen to. I believe it’s important to follow your intuition and what you feel is right, rather than following a trend or what’s viral right now because that will eventually fade away.
